Depends on what he considers Russia air space? Is it all of Old Russia, Europe and Alaska? Nothing we can really do with the limp noodle in the White House, anyway, unless we get another reset.... Too busy working on the Mulligan's and the reset with ISIS, I guess....

Ultimately airlines will just stop any flights in or out of Russia. It would hurt them more. In reality it's not logistically smart. That would mean no more fed-ex, ups, cargo, mail, or even domestic flights into or out of Russia.
Flights will just divert to a different route. Just as easy to go over the North pole to China, Japan, ect.... India and the rest will be a skip underneath Russia.

If Putin closes Russia's airspace, what implications does it leave
Que?
Que?

depends what that airspace is. The amount of trancontential flights that go over Russia is pretty significant. Practically any flight from the far east to Europe has to fly over Russia to get there. It is over Russian air space that is very rural and very few people live there, but if they shut that down that is a huge deal.

Is he actually considering doing that?

how does this flight
EDDF to RJTT make this flight?
LINK
That is a significant more time to fly over the north poll. May not be possible to do so with this flight. Going south to the widest part of the earth also isn't practical would add a few more hours. That is a lot of money if they have to add a few hours daily to their flight.
how about getting to ZBAA or Bejing from the United States? All of those flights go over Russia to make it. Any other way the flight may not be possible.
(for the west coast cities that is doable, but not the east.)

He's just being a dick because he can. This is why you don't just let him run roughshod any time he wants to. It only emboldens him to do other stupid shite.

I suppose the chances of the random airliner shoot down will be reduced.

West Russia is really the one area of russia that has a high population. The majority of East russia is pretty sparsely populated. I don't think Putin would waste his time trying to control that airspace.

Is this just a hypothetical that you are asking? I ask because it would be one of the dumbest things a leader of an international "power" has ever done.

With new European Union sanctions looming over Russia, the country has announced that it considered blocking international flights through its airspace. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev referred to Western airlines in general, but in reality such restrictions would mainly hit European airlines which offer direct flights to Asia. The necessity to "bypass our airspace ... could drive many struggling airlines into bankruptcy," Medvedev was quoted as saying Monday in the Russian business newspaper Vedomosti.

They are such fcking tards. This is kind of fun watching them slowly crash their economy and make asses of themselves for the world to see

frickload cheaper than losing a plane dipshit. Ask Malaysian Airlines. When you have a little more knowledge in these areas let me know. It pretty easy to Google maps, and common flight plans, however like I said..... This hurts Russia way more than it does the airlines.
Russia is attempting the resurrection of the cold war. Problem is the rest of the world can either call their bluff or exile them as they dis during the 60s, 70s, and 80's. Reagan basically played poker, put up more money, and called the bluff. Putin is old school, cold war, Russian KGB, and desires for the old USSR. He knows O'dumbshit is a mom-pants wearing panty waists, and is a little kid playing with a big stick.

We fly via Moscow to Singapore out of IAH so that would lead our company to pay more for the tickets going westbound rather than eastbound. And it's several hours longer.
