I'm thinking about converting our fireplace to a gas log and have a few questions.

It's an old traditional brick fireplace/chimney that we don't use because I just don't feel like dealing with wood. I'd like to convert it and trying to decide between a vented insert and sealing off the chimney for a ventless. I know that ventless provides more heat, which is a plus.

Anyone have any personal experience or advice?

Any recommendations for someone to do the work in Lafayette?

TIA

This is the equivalent of getting a breast reduction. You're paying to make something awesome suck.

We converted our fireplace to non vented and used for about 8 years with no problems. When we sold the house, the home inspector listed a need for a carbon monoxide detector. We complied and I don't know if we could install vent free today.

I do not know it the info in this link is "law" or not. LINK

you will never get the BTUs and use from gas as you do a wood fireplace.

You don't even need to buy wood, just get those long burn logs.
They leave almost no ash either.

I did, and mine is still vented. Frick dealing with logs. I need to get mine setup on remote control though. I wonder who could do that and how much it would cost.

Yes. We had to do ours because our fireplace didn't properly draw and the den filled with smoke.

I had no idea people wanted to do this...I want to do the opposite

I have a gas log...the gas bill is a killer during the winter because the kids ALWAYS want it on.

If you can do it, I recommended installing a blower so you can make use of the heat. We had the builder install one and I'm glad we did...we would probably leave it off all the time otherwise.

Use Mike Baker brick for the conversation.

Prepare to notice a healthy increase in your Atmos Gas Bill this winter.

I believe the logs for ventless ones are super expensive compared to the logs for vented gas.

Holy bizarro world, batman. I want to do the exact opposite. Turning my gas, non-vented fireplace into gas starter, wood burning fireplace. Gotta love that snap crackle pop.

you do not want a vent free in Louisiana. It's hot as frick and will have an entire room heated within a few minutes. For our location it is very rarely cold enough to warrant the heat those things put out. Go with a vented log set (not an insert), all you need is a gas or propane line ran to the existing fireplace

Don't do this.

I doubt they'll even be selling these much longer.

So OT trashy...

The real ballers have gas piped in to light their wood with utmost convenience.

Yea, I have a ventless and I hate that it's there. Would rather no fireplace than ventless.

I was considering it when I built. The more I read, the worse it got.

Ended up just doing gas logs again.

Had gas burning in the old house and we used it a lot more than I though we would. Haven't even bought "logs" for the ventless yet and we've been here just under a year. Probably won't either.

Really?

Thanks to all for the opinions. It's a tough call, but we just don't use it as much as we would if it was gas. Of course I prefer the snap crackle and pop, but not a big fan of dealing with wood indoors.

You'll spend some decent money on a nice set of gas logs, but they look great. It will give you the effect you want w/o the mess.

We converted ours to a vented w/ a set up from Percy Guidry's. We absolutely loved it !!!! It put out great warmth and you had to look at it closely for a while to realize it wasn't a real fire. NO CLEAN UP, NO SMOKE IN HOUSE, NO CLEANING CHIMNEY, and INSTANT ON/OFF. However, we moved to a new home a couple years ago with a ventless, it was disappointing. We have since gotten rid of the ventless gas logs and put in fire glass. It doesn't give off much heat but it is BEAUTIFUL, and is the centerpiece of the living area. Our new home is well insulated and there is very little need to have a large fireplace to put out heat.
