Upgrading HDD to SSD in Macbook Pro

I want to upgrade my HDD to a SSD in my Macbook Pro.
Few questions:
I was thinking of getting this SSD
Is this ok?
Also, I want to use the old HDD as an external hard drive so what case or caddy do I need to get to have the correct connections?

FYI, that same SSD is at Amazon for $119 Prime Shipping: LINK
The version you linked is the "desktop bundle" which comes with 3.5" bracket, SATA cable, screws, and a USB-to-SATA cable adapter - which is all handy for a desktop upgrade, but no point in spending extra for it when you won't use that stuff in a laptop.

Just wanted to give you some feedback on upgrading to the ssd. I put a 490GB ssd in my 2012 MacBook Pro and the results are pretty amazing. From powered off, I can boot to the login screen in about 15 seconds. Overall performance is great. I used to have issues opening office applications or searching through my email inbox in Mac mail, which is rather large.
I demo it to my clients to push purchasing either replacement drives or replacement computers with ssd or ssd+standard combos. I open all the office apps, mail, all components of creative suite, and my web browser. Then I shut down and check reopen windows when logging in. It starts up, logs in, then opens all the apps. It's fully functional in about 30 seconds. Needless to say, we're selling a lot of them now.
Did you plan on cloning the drive to the ssd or doing a clean install?

I just put that same drive in my MBP yesterday. Feels like a new laptop.

I'm in the process of upgrading my mid-2009 MBP 17". <$100 to go to 8gig RAM from 4gigs. Have Mavericks and latest VMWare and Windows 8.1 Pro.
Trying to decide if worth going SSD. The only $ i've put in is the <100 for RAM, but I just can't justify spending much more money on an old computer.
Currently have 500gig HDD. I am afraid 250 isn't going to be enough even if i store all my big files on an external.
Thoughts?
ETA: $209 shipped for Crucial 512gig: LINK
So for just over $300 total, i go from a clunky outdated Mac, to a pretty capable one with both latest Mac OS and Windows. Battery life is still strong (better than a cheap ASUS). And don't have to fool with extra computer.

I can't think of any cheaper way to have a faster MacBook.

Yeah, but then i think about putting the $300 toward a Surface instead, for my Windows needs (which are now very very few). That while I'll have a tablet (never been a tablet person apart from reading on Kindle, but might become one)
I have two other macs and I'm probably adding a second Air when next model comes out.
But the MBP is a beast. I obviously don't have retina but the big display has served me well with Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. Maybe I'll start with the RAM and go from there.

I highly recommend getting a SSD for your macbook pro.
I slacked and kept my HDD in. I recently dropped my laptop off my desk and once it hit the ground, my HDD broke but this would not have happened if I had the SDD.
Good luck!

If you don't have but a few reasons to run Windows occasionally, you may as well run it in a virtual machine or bootcamp on one of your macs.
