from tiger rant

I got the yips in high school my sophomore year. Played catcher and couldn't throw it back to the pitcher. I could fire it in from right field though so they put me in the outfield the rest of my career. Weirdest shite ever. I did break my throwing wrist sliding into second base the year before. Instead of rehabbing correctly, I went straight to fall football when my cast came off mid summer. I think this had something to do with it. Muscle memory was gone.

My new nickname was Rube, who was the catcher in major league II who had the same problem.

Same exact thing happened to a kid in high school. He was a catcher and couldn't throw it back to the pitcher out of nowhere. He'd throw it way over his head, way off to the side, into the ground, etc. Everywhere but back to the pitcher.

He cured it by throwing from the pitchers mound to somebody behind the plate.

All of a sudden, he could throw from the catcher's spot again.

Weird.

He got the yips. That's why he couldn't throw it back to the pitcher.

No problems ever until that season, played catcher forever. I still had a strong arm, but had no accuracy on a short throw. Accuracy was fine from the outfield or when i threw a knuckleball on a short throw.

Wasn't it Steve Sax, Dodger infielder, who got them so bad he couldn't make the throw to first from 2nd ?

I got it in high school playing catcher as well. My freshman year I was the backup catcher, while warming up our star pitcher, I threw it high and when he came down he sprained his ankle. For the rest of the year, I had this mental problem throwing it back to the pitcher. I was always going to be a 3rd baseman and was just needed to help out at catcher that year, but anytime I filled in at catcher over the years, the problem came back immediately. It was really weird.

I'd get it from time to time throughout my baseball career. Nothing major at all though. And only once in a game. It would mostly happen throwing "flat grounds" right after stretching it out to 200+ feet. Get used to throwing bombs with a high trajectory then immediately have to throw to a guy squatting down at 30 feet. All the while your arm is live as shite and you don't wanna kill your friend who's dreading catching you.

The time I got it in a game was my first start in Burlington. Walked the bases loaded on 12 pitches, have up a triple, and was yanked. Swear on everything I love it felt like there was a force field in the strike zone. Like the ball and strike zone were the same poles of a magnet and when the ball reached the plate it refused to hit the catcher's mitt. I was all kindsa fricked up.

It happens now from time to time playing darts too. Out of nowhere it's like I can't hit the number I'm going for to save my life. It's just thinking too much. Lasts a few throws then it's gone.

It's amazing what the mind can do. It's not bullshite that "the game is, insert percentage, mental."

I have a good friend that gets the yips throwing BP. Out of nowhere he goes from throwing lasers to skipping balls 20 ft in front of home plate. Weird.

Rick Ankiel had them bad as a P. At one time he was a helluva closer but all of a sudden he literally couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Fortunately for him he was such a great athlete he was able to transition to outfield in the bigs and did pretty well.

Would happen to me from time to time. I played 2nd base throughout highschool. I could make a diving play up the middle and then gun the guy at first, but it was the throw I could take my time on from about 15 feet away that I would sail way over the 1st baseman's head. It would make me livid. Still irks me to think about now
