Why do teams never move up in polls after a loss?

If an unranked team loses in overtime to the number one team, why wouldn't they move into the top 25?

I don't recall this ever happening.

because polls are stupid and pollsters are too stubborn and stick to their preseason baseline rankings.

Because voters are stupid.

Another thing... if the #20 team loses to the #1 team, they always drop. Why? They just played the #1 team... they were supposed to lose.

Why can't they just stay at #20? As long as they played as well as a #20 team should play...

Well, duh. But not all losses are equal. Like the other guy said, if the #20 team loses to the number one team they always drop in the polls. Why?

Well West Virginia received no AP votes last week but gained 7 this week after losing to Bama by 10.

Similarly, Oklahoma State received 94 votes after losing to Fla. St by 6, while they only had 37 votes the week before.

The pollsters have gotten MUCH MUCH better with this the last 5 years or so.

It used to be auto drop 10 spots after a loss. This thread is a few years late, even if there is a little work left to do on that front.

I agree with this. I'm actually just surprised that OKSt. didn't jump in around 21-24. They definitely earned a spot in the top 25.

They were only 50 votes out of #25, someone was definitely paying attention.

How many times have you seen the number one team play some nobody, play like poo for three quarters and the game is close, then turn it on and win easily? It happens all the time. Should we move those teams up in the rankings too?

Hell, put half of lsu's schedule in the top ten right now.

Is op really saying a 3-5 team should move up in the rankings because of one good game?

No, but let's say a team is 6-1 and ranked #21. The play the #1 team into overtime. They usually drop in the polls, which makes no sense. Why wouldn't they, at a minimum, stay at #21 or possibly move up to #19 or so?

I don't think I've ever seen that scenario where the team drops in the rankings.

Besides, a 6-1 team wouldn't be that low anyways
