Do you consider it lazy when a band uses proper nouns in lyrics?

When I hear a band use lyrics like "September", "West Virginia", ect I think that's lazy.

Red hot chili peppers immediately comes to mind

I have no problem with proper nouns. It's the acronyms that set me off. Also hyperboles.

Why? Sometimes there is more behind the surface than just the literal meaning.

Why??

Big Star's September Gurls is one of the greatest power pop songs of all time!

I realize those were just two examples, but I don't have an issue with it unless they force it in there just to rhyme or something..

Yup.

OTOH, I was wondering this morning what David Allen Coe would have done if he was forced to write songs without using his own name or the names of other musicians.

Lazy and downright insulting to the audience.

No but when they write a song about what it's like to be in a band then I do consider that to be lazy.

Again, I'll respectfully disagree.. may be a silly tune, but always a fun listen...

It's just too easy, they don't come up with their own shite. It's like when "fiction" writers use real places as their setting. Colorado is a real place, there's nothing fiction about it. And yet Stephen King still has the balls to call The Shining fiction. It's just unoriginal.

So they should make up a new calendar and then use those made up months in their songs?

Wake me up when glipokin ends

Ray Charles - Georgia is such a lazy sack of shite song.

He should've named it Blortak

It's better than using the same old months that everyone already knows.

The same applies to women's names in songs. Mandy? Yeah, that's a real person (it's a lot of real people actually). Nothing original about it. Like the OP said, just lazy.
