Why the hell would Fredo get in a boat alone with Michael's main assassin, Al Neri?

Fredo had a good heart, but he was weak and stupid. And at that particular moment the stupidity quality reigned supreme, plus he just really loved to fish.

I think he just knew the gig was up and there was no way he was getting out of it. He resigned himself to face his death with what dignity he could. Hence the praying the Hail Mary.

That's kind of what was I thinking, I go back and forth on whether Michael should have killed him or not.

He was going fishing. It never occurred to him that his brother might have him killed.

This. Regardless of what Fredo did, having him killed was a step beyond what we thought Michael would do, considering how important family was.

He had to. Fredo was a frick up. It was for the good of the family.

I think it definitely dawned on him when they came out and got Michael's son.

That's kind of the theme that they were building imo. Michael was doing things for the "good of the family" at the cost of his actual family. He ripped apart his family while ostensibly protecting it.

And I agree with Methuselah. Fredo was simply resigned to his fate.

John Cazale.

Dated Meryl Streep and was in only 5 movies in his career...and all 5 were nominated for Best Picture.

Yeah, it is all in his face. He was to weak and stupid to do anything about it.

I've always found it pretty fascinating how the different people who knew (or might have known) they were about to get killed reacted.

Tessio was pretty cool - He asked Tom to inform Michael that it wasn't personal, just business. And of course he took the long shot asking Tom if he could get him off "for old times' sake".

Frankie of course went the extra step. He killed himself. (Of course he had to so that his family would be taken care of). I always liked his line "and sometimes they threw a little party before".

Carlos is another like Fredo where you don't know how much he knew or suspected. But he struggled when the garrote went around his neck - kicking out the windshield.

All were pretty spot on characterizations of the different characters.

I don't know that I ever hated Fredo. Pitied him is probably a better word. You have to remember he was the older brother after Sonny was killed but because everyone knew he wasn't competent he got skipped over for Michael. He should've never done some of the shite he did but it's hard to overlook how slighted he probably felt.

Sonny should never have been in charge. He was too hot tempered. Fredo was borderline mentally challenged and should have taken his place as a henchman. You never go against the family. Fredo deserved what he got.

I feel bad for Fredo too. (The scene where he had pneumonia as a baby and they were treating him with some old folk remedy involving a glass and a candle always kind of made me cringe).

But honestly, there is no way Fredo could have run the family. In the cut throat world of those crime families the Corleones wouldn't have lasted any time without a competent leader.

Fredo knew he was about to be whacked, dumb as he was. He finally wised up enough to understand his fate.

"Tessio was always smarter."

I never got that line. If Tessio were "smarter", he would've known the one attempting to broker the sitdown would've been perceived as the traitor. More ambitious than fat Clemenza, maybe, but definitely not "smarter" in any sense that I understand the word.
