I haven't gone deer hunting since I was a kid, but I recently won a new rifle(Savage .25-06 axis) and was debating on if I should spend a few dollars to put a scope on it and have a rifle in case I wanted to go hunting in the future. Is this gun worth a crap, I'm not familiar with the ballistics of a .25-06. I know its just a cheap gun, but savage make a decent low cost rifle from what I'm told. If so, any suggestions on a decent scope under $300 bucks to put on it?

A good gun. Just APITA to find good bullets. Use 120 gr.

If a .270 and a 30-06 had a baby... it'd be named 25-06.

I'm surprised it's not the official caliber of the OB.

I think the 25-06 is a pretty good deer and hog rifle. A quick look at ballistics shows the 25-06 has more power than the 243. Basically the 25-06 is the same as the 7mm-08. The 25-06 will shoot a smaller bullet faster but will still have the same energy as the 7mm-08's heavy loads.

Perfect gun for deer hunting.

Go with the 120 gr bullets for deer. With the internet these days it really is not hard to find ammo for any gun. Order online and it will be in your mail box in a week. You will be able to find ammo for this caliber. I would not worry about that.

Under $300 for a scope, Leupold VX2, any of the new model Redfields, or Nikon buckmaster scopes.

The 25-06 is good for any big game you'll come across around here. As mentioned, buy a 120 grain load (Remington Core-Lokt and Winchester Power Point are fine; the 25-06 doesn't require loads costing $50/box.)

As far as scopes, one way to save a little money w/o sacrificing quality is to buy a refurbished scope. Natchez Shooters Supply usually has a good selection. I've bought a number of refurb scopes from them through the years and have never been disappointed.

You might wanna look at a Nikon Prostaff. I picked up a 3x9x50 at academy for $159.

I have a Vortex Crossfire II on the way, supposed to be pretty good. Warranty is also the best in the business.

Any Nikon will be a good bang for your buck.

Any scope from Academy will have the best warranty in the industry.

Have had my .25-06 for 25+ yars now. It's still the only deer rifle I own. Love that thing.

Yes - the caliber is perfect and the gun is ok.

In fact, I endorse any .25-06 or 7mm08 for ALL needs from whitetail on down the chain.

Take your time and catch a good scope on sale after the upcoming season.

I put a Nikon pro staff 3x9x50 on the 7mm08 last year - works just fine
