I'd go with Ravenswood Old Vine Zinfandel. Perfect for anything with tomato sauce.

Zins are prolly the best value in red wine.

Red Diamond Merlot is a favorite of mine in the cheap wine category. It's actually just a little lower than your price range.

i've enjoyed alamos, got it pretty cheap once i think around $9 at a local market.

never seen ravenswood, will keep an eye on that one

Don't know if you have a Costco in your area.....I have been pleasantly surprised at the selection of reds they have in the $9 to $25 range.......some California and Oregon, French, Argetine, Chilean and Spanish.....they rotate often so if you find one you like you might have to search around though.

columbia crest is usually my go-to (~$7) but i haven't seen it around here lately much

Penfolds Konoonga Hill Cab/shiraz should be around that price purnt. Its great.
