NFL Bans 'Slap Ya Mama' commercials.

LINK

Not sure this belongs in F&D or More Sports, but in it's campaign against domestic violence, the NFL has banned 'Slap Ya Momma' red zone commercials. I have always thought the name of this product was in questionable taste (I don't buy it), but I guess since they gave Ray Rice a minimal penalty for actual violence, this is the next best thing to really doing something.

I wonder how much longer players will be allowed to wear 'wife beater' undershirts?

I read this today in The Advocate.

This is crazy! I hope they don't play "Hit Me Baby One More Time" from Britney Spears over the speakers.

I dont agree with it because I understand the phrase as it is meant, a term of endearment. But considering not everyone is from south Louisiana & they don't understand the origin of the phrase, I can see where the NFL has to play the PC & negative publicity game. Violence against women is a huge,& rightfully so, problem & in light of the recent Ray Rice fiasco, no way the NFL allows questionable wording to be a part of the game experience. When picking a name for a product that you intend to market nationally, & internationally, one should take into consideration the fact that what is acceptable in one region, may not be acceptable, or may hold negative connotations, in another region.

Can you explain this to a non-Cajun living in S LA? You're not saying that quote from the VP is accurate are you? Here's the quote:
quote:

maintained that the name "refers to a loving slap on the back and a kiss on the cheek to your mama as a thank you for preparing another great-tasting dish."

OK, I can accept that. But I still think is a lousy decision to name your product "Slap ya Mama" if you want to market to regions other than Cajun country. That's not gonna fly in this day and time. Can't blame the NFL. Look what's going on with the "Redskins" name. It's all about money, but that's where fan economic behavior has brought us.

I agree 100% (see my original post). Some words/phrases/sayings, outside of their region of origin, are not acceptable because they can be misunderstood.

Yes. See the words "(n-word)-dly" and "homophone". Neither one means what it sounds like and people have suffered and been punished due to ignorance and stupidity of others.

Funny, even TD censored my post like this
quote:

Yes. See the words "****dly" and "homophone". Neither one means what it sounds like.
Point made, I guess.

Slap ya mama is not Cajun or regional phrase, so your argument doesn't work.

The NFL is walking on eggshells because they screwed up with Rice.

what's funny about all of this is that they've gotten more free publicity than they could have ever imagined from this

another classic knee jerk reaction by goodell and co...

Good grief...

It doesn't really mean slap your mother. It means it's good. Like slap your pappa. It's not meant to actually slap your father.

While needing explanation really does kinda ruin the name, that's not a bad sentiment. What I never understood is why the commercial had her put on a catcher's mask to avoid facial trauma.

All I meant was that it was not a phrase used only in Cajun country. I grew up in VP and never heard anyone say it until my roommate from Michigan said it when I spent a summer in DC during college.
