First off, I know almost nothing about technology. I am a physician and when in training, we still used "beepers" to communicate.

Fast forward to today. I cut off my cable at home in the last year and have been very happy just watching netflix for TV/movies. I have not missed it at all.

With football season starting, I am now on edge. I want to be able to watch SEC network and all the other games I can on espn, etc.

Here is what I have:
1. New model flatscreen HDTV with any input you need.
2. Macbook PRO
3. Internet and WIFI connection
4. Charter Cable with sports package and SEC Network - but it is at my condo in Auburn.

I do not mind paying upfront for a device. I just do not want to pay monthly fees to watch games at my home when I am already paying at the condo.

Is my best bet a sling box? How complicated is it to hook up? Is there a better device? Are there monthly fees for it?

Thanks for any help in advance.

If you Charter, you should be able to login and watch it via the WatchESPN app, online or through an Apple TV, Roku, etc.

That is at least how I understand their FAQs

A sling box would be also be good for you to use to watch all channels that you have at your condo (provided that someone at the condo isn't using the TV when you want to watch it). No monthly fees, not complicated to hook up and you need pretty good internet in both locations. However, I am not sure how you would watch your sling box on your TV at your current place, other than hooking up your MBP or mirroring the device through an Apple TV. I know they have an app for iPad, but I don't think they have anything comparable on the Apple TV or Roku, or even through Smart TV apps.

as stated above...any device (apple tv/roku/chromecast) can be hooked up to your TV and provided an internet connection to use watchespn...all you have to do is visit a site and put in your charter information.

I only have roku devices, and it may take a whopping 10 minutes from un-open box to watching tv (hdmi hookup and then connect to your wireless).

Just to clarify a few things:

The condo is empty when my family and I are not there. No conflict in the channel selection.

I have never tried to log on to a watchESPN app or anything like that. I may need to start testing the things out this weekend!

Thanks

If it is empty, a Slingbox would work. It controls the cable box on the end, which would mean if you were using it at home, anyone viewing it at the condo would be watching what you had on. That does require a pretty robust internet connection, as you would most likely be uploading HD video to stream. Also, I am still not sure of the best way to watch that on your TV.

If you only really want to watch SEC network at home, then go with an Apple TV (or similar) and use the app. Give it a shot on your smart phone to try logging into the app to see how it works.

The only con to that is that you may run into issues with blackouts or different broadcast networks (not sure how that works with SEC network) That is something you may want to consider.

If I were you, I'd get the Apple TV. For $100 bucks, you can stream anything to it from your iPhone/iPad and get Watch ESPN, HBOGo, etc.

You should have been provided a charter email address...go to their website and setup your account if you haven't already done so. The login you use to access WatchESPN will be that charter email address and whatever password you create. This will also be used to access any other entertainment you go with that may require the login (for example...HBOGo, Disney)

I think the slingbox idea would be the only way there would be channel conflict...I actually use a friends login for WatchESPN (his subscription apparently doesn't grant access to SEC Network, boo) and I've been known to have it running downstairs on one roku, on my office tv w/ another roku and then via my computer all at the same time...so definitely no conflict there.

You seem like the kind of guy who likes to save a buck. If that's the case, buy a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable from Monoprice (less than $15).

Then download your choice of app to control the laptop from your phone/ipad (remote mouse is free and works great. The app page links this tiny program to download to your laptop to control it and the app goes on the mobile device). You then have the ability to do anything your laptop can do right on your tv for about 10% the cost of an AppleTV.

some call me cheap CAD703X but I see it different. I just despise monthly payments of any kind. (and i laughed at your comment)

i go through phases of interest. Avoiding rotating costs ends up saving me $$$ in the long run.
