What are some of the cons to doing this? I know about the dirt factor, but what are some other negatives. I have an opportunity to rent a slip. I would definitely use the boat more if I didn't have to trailer it everywhere. What's the downside?

If it's a white fiberglass boat the bottom will stain.

we keep ours on a lift, bottom gets a brown tint everytime we take it out. just make sure to clean it damn good anytime you take it out

Even keeping a boat on the lift will speed up the wear and tear on a boat. At least in salt water. If you leave the boat in the water, it will have a brown line around it unless you have a good bottom paint job. Everything metal, even aluminum and stainless, will oxidize faster. I know if I'm spending the kind of money that boats cost these days, I'm doing everything I can to store it in the optimum conditions.

I do this behind my place sometimes with an old Logic/Triumph boat made of Ropeline, not fiberglass. I pull it up and scrape/p-wash it if it gets barnacles or algae and it is fine. I try to minimize the time it is docked, unless the fishing is good.

Do not store a nice expensive fiberglass boat on the water. It will get growth and you will damage it removing the growth.

IMO, the only boats that should be on the water for any length of time are large sailboats, yaghts and workboats and they should have bottom paint.

Another option that my neighbor uses to protect his bottom in the water:

Get a large tarp or billboard sheet, run cable and pool noodles through it and keep that under and around the boat. Apparently, the water inside, between the sheeting and the hull gets stagnant and prohibits growth. He has kept it that way since Isaac and has not had algae or barnacles. But beware: It does not look fancy.

Mine is in the water mostly.

Cons: I have bottom paint which makes the hull look ugly. Although, I've heard they make white bottom paint now so I may look into that. Its a pain to go fishing somewhere else since you have to go pick up the boat then trailer elsewhere.

Pros: I definitely use the boat more when its in the water.

I think my whole point to keeping it in the water is to use it more. The white bottom paint may be an option, I'll have to look into that. As far as having to trailer the boat elsewhere, I have to do that now anyway. I appreciate all of the input.

If you leave it in the water you definitely need bottom paint on it.

If on a hoist bottom paint is not necessary.

From experience you will use it more if it is there on a lift ready to go.

This! I fight this shite EVERYTIME I take mine out. The previous owner kept the boat on a lift and would just hoes it off. Now The bottom stains the second I put in. But the top is good to go.

I left a couple poles in mine, only issue so far is that saturday morning one of the bait casters was bird nested and left on the deck. Its in a nice secured facility, guess who ever did it wasnt a total piece of shite. I made sure i got mine bottom painted. Stays in salt water.

Mine stay on a lift. Even on the lift I wash it at the end of the weekend. Being lake water and fairly clean it doesnt stain much but it adds up over time. A good wax at the begonning of season helps keep it easy to clean. My jetski sits on a drive on "port" so the keel is always kinda in the water. It is stained bad and no washing or scrubbing will make a dent.
