Going with a group of guys to hunt quails on Labor Day. Have a couple of noob questions since it is my first trip ever.

1. I'm using a 20 ga. Should I use 3 inch or 2 3/4 shells?
2. I was planing on bringing a plastic wal-mart bag to put the birds in out in the field. Is this ok or what should I bring?
3. I was going to wear hunters orange (cap + vest). Good idea or not necessary?

Any tips or advice is appreciated.

1. 2 3/4, 3 is WAY over-kill
2. the outfit should have the bags for you
3. REALLY good idea. it also lets the guide know you take safety seriously

where you going?

Pen raised hunt. Let the birds get up before blasting so you get some sport out of it and don't shoot a dog.

Wear Orange. They may supply it.

Would not put in a Wally World bag. I would get a game vest you can put them. Guide will probably have a cooler handy since it will probably be hot as hades while you are in the field.

I would use 2 3/4". No need for 3's at the ranges you will shoot at.

Some place just west of Austin, Texas. Not sure exactly where. I think around Mason. Some farmer is letting a group of us hunt on his land.

Thanks for the tips.

It is hot as hell to be running dogs in this heat. I didn't even think pen birds opened till mid October.

Wear orange, dove loads, pick up a cheap orange hunting vest for your shells and birds.

Pen raised quail = box cars
wild quail = ferraris

I can't imagine ya'll are doing anything but a kicknshoot in early september....

not much dog work in 90degree temps in an upland setting...

heck I had to CARRY a GSP back to truck after an early october FT... which he won..

YES, WEAR ORANGE CAP, ORANGE VEST, AND/OR ORANGE PANELS ON SHIRT.

Quail shooting can be high intensity, and when you're caught up in the moment and leading a flushed bird, he might fly right across somebody in your party (or a dog). Always try to know where everyone is and keep your head while shooting. I've got a buddy who's a quail guide for a big ranch in Texas and he's been peppered by clients a few times. Thankfully no big injuries.

Sounds like you will be in rattlesnake country. Might want to look into getting some snake boots

Pen raised bird costs less than $5. Bird dogs and friends are worth a lot more. Let bird get up before shooting even if that means no shot or tough shot eventually. If more than two shooting at a flush make sure everyone is relatively spread out and in a straight line approaching the flush. May want to let two experienced shooters kick up first birds and watch before shooting.

as others said 2 3/4" low power shells. If you do a lot of shooting your shoulder will thank you. You will need some sort of vest to hold your shells and most have a back pouch to store birds. Most of the time you will start out with a box of shells. Some use a belt with a pouch attached large enough for a box of shells.

An orange vest/hat is highly recommended. Be prepared with plenty of water. You should be doing a lot of walking. Lightweight boots and gun are helpful.

If you have a guide with dogs the dog will bring the bird to the guide who will keep them until you get back to the truck.

Wear snake chaps or something to protect from rattlesnakes and the briars. Wrangler makes a pair of blue jeans with field pants legs. Boots also work. Wear as much red/orange as you can wear (head, vest, shirt). I shoot pen raised birds all the time, but would never run my dogs between May - September. It will be 100 plus degrees around Austin in the Hill Country and dogs can't last more than 30 minutes in that heat. Take plenty of water for you and the dogs.

Shoot 7.5 shot, 2 3/4's. Field load is fine. Shorter barrel on the gun and open (skeet or field) choke is best. Don't shoot at the ground for low flying birds and pay attention to the dogs. Better to pass on shots unless 100% sure it is clear. Some dogs break when the birds flush.

On pen raised birds, most of the time it will be 2 - 3 birds per covey. You can't be hunting wild birds because the season starts Oct. 25th in Texas.

Come back when it is cooler and don't forget to shoot any dove flying around if hunting in the Central Zone after Sept. 1. Some of my best dove hunts have happened while quail hunting.
