I'm 21 and often times I find myself saying "if you knew then what you know now things would be so much easier/better." So what are some things I should know so I won't be kicking myself in the future. Older folks of the ot feel free to chime in. Tia

Start saving 10+% of every paycheck you have for retirement.

ETA- focus on buying assets that will appreciate before you buy ones that depreciate.

Meet as many people as you can. Get involved in stuff locally. Clubs, organizations, charities, etc.

Build a network of people you can call at two in the morning and they would come help you.

This and establish good credit if you have not already. Your life by 30 will be much easier if you do these two things.

Take your schooling seriously. Doing well will have major impacts on your future.

If you aspire to marriage and a family, it's easier to meet people now than it ever will be again.

If you have grandparents, spend as much time with them as you can.

And if you do, make sure she doesn't know your last name and where you live.

Don't go to law school.

Learn a trade or technical skill if you don't plan on becoming a professional.

Don't get arrested.

Start saving for retirement, in any way you can. Compound interest is your friend.

Sometimes, it's worth it to spend extra money on things that will last.

Always use a trash bag that's a size bigger than the trash can.

Take care of your things. (house, car, etc.)

The cop cars parked in the construction zones on I-12 normally don't have anyone in them. Speed away.

Hopefully you're not retarded and are still in college. If so the most solid advice I have ever received in my life, and the only bit I will gladly give to anyone and everyone.

Replace "high school" with "work" "get a job" or "graduate college"
