Have a 18' Boston whaler outrage. It is a 1988 model. It's a great boat but needs a lot of cosmetic work. I want to remove all of the hardware, motor, controls etc and have it restored to original condition.

First I am looking for a good local gel coat body shop. Then I want to have all of the hardware cleaned/polished and teak refinished.

Any advice? A good source for whaler parts? Paint shop?

TIA

Do you have a sentimantal connection to the boat? Have you done this before? If the answer is no to either or both of these questions sell it/ give it away and buy a good used boat ready to fish...

What the other guy said... Restorations are expensive and/or time consuming. But if you insist, don't re-gelcoat. Have it painted with a good quality paint (Awlgrip, Imron, Sikkens, etc). Holds up way better than gelcoat. And even more utilitarian would be a wrap.

If it was an aluminum boat I'd disagree

In this case, absolutely.
The money you'll sink into it to have a 25 yo 18' boston whaler just ain't worth it. IMHO

The boat has been in the family since new. Dad bought it and he always wanted to keep it. He passed in October. My brothers and I want to do this because of the history and the expense will be shared five ways.

Looking for a good paint shop that won't bend us over.

Roger. In that case, good luck man. I don't have much experience in gel cote. The hardware polishing just requires a lot of elbow grease.

Stan Harris in Prairieville painted mine. Its Imron. Paint job is 6 years old and still has a perfect mirror finish. I wax once a year.

Those whalers are great and I have several friends with 18' outrages from the late 80's that are still running strong.

It will be time consuming to fix the gel coat but doable. I can recommend some guys in Nola if you decide you want to drag it over there.

The teak should be easy to fix up since all it probably needs is varnish.

I was and still am completely fascinated everything you did on that boat. Plus it turn out to be one of the most beautiful boats I've ever seen.

Thanks again. Its been a neat project, but a headache too. Still a work in progress. I wish I would have done the rehab on a beat up Jupiter 31 or Regulator 32 though. Its amazing how small the 26 foot boat (its 28.5 ft with the bracket) has become. I'm way too far in now to quit.
