Obviously we had unbelievable production from 2 high draft picks last season, but a few things got me thinking...

Seeing James Wright catch a very nice touchdown pass in the preseason, plus the fact that we are heading into the season with some very unproven and inexperienced receiver makes me wonder if we should have mixed in more guys.

I know we primarily utilize 1 and 2 wide receiver sets which included only Beckham, Landry or both, but should we have played more James Wright, Travin Dural, Quantavious Leslie and others to use different skill sets and prepare for this season? Should we have used more 3, 4 and 5 receiver formations to get more guys the ball?

You are probably right. But the main goal is always winning, and the coaches job depends on that. The players this year will have enough experience to step in.

I think we will see four to five receivers be in the mix this year as opposed to two to three last year! I also think with a mobile quarterback we will see more three wide and perhaps some four wide formations this fall.

so we become the first SEC team to have a 3,000 yard passer, 1,000 yard rusher, and TWO 1,000 yard receivers in the same season and you're asking if we should have done things differently?

No. Could you imagine Les sitting Jarvis and Odell and telling them "y'all sit out so we can prepare the other WRs for when y'all are gone."

We could have had 4-wide, and OBJ/Landry both double covered and Mett still would have tried to throw the ball to one of them

Yes. We should have benched Beckham and Landry. Just wasn't fair, they were too good.

Just seems like we could have rotated guys in and out more and used more 3-4 wide receiver sets.

Just a question I am posing, and it seems like some people think so

I love when people say things like this.
Yes we should have done things in games last year to prepare for this year instead of to win the game....

We should have started Jennings earlier too since Mett is no longer here.

The offense carried the team for a change. We led the entire nation in 3rd down % ( one of the best in recent yrs ). We dont do this, mixing in younger or less talented guys. The chemistry and rhythm between those 3 was incredible for a SEC team. U play to win the game. The 3rd down rate and almost injury free saved our season.
Unfortunately, we didnt have the luxury of playing alot of younger WR's last yr to help with the learning curve this yr.
As far as whether he shouldve had more 4-5 WR sets, who knows? But, its hard to argue with the stats the O put up last year and the way they controlled the game.

I'm pretty happy with the passing game last year, no reason to complain. Probably will be a while before we see another 3,000 yard passing season.

4 receivers from last year's group are in the nfl. We used plenty. Think before posting. Avery Peterson was hurt, Dural coming off an injury, and Leslie still needs a few biscuits... What's the suggestion?
We have ourselves the best chance we had to win and improve as far as I can tell
