That's hard to answer without knowing what kind of music you like or want to play.

In general, I would say the best one is the one that feels comfortable in your hands and sounds good in your ears. In other words, play as many in your budget range as you can get your hands on and buy the one that feels/sounds the best.

Good luck.

I would say a Fender Mexican Strat (if you can find it at that price) or an MVG Les Paul (that's what I have). Rondo music also sells these Les Paul copies that are really really great for the price and way better than an epi. Epi LP's are cheap junk.

I can't recommend this one enough
LINK

It sounds incredible.

^^^. Mexi Strat or Tele depending on what you're into. The good thing about those two is that if you want to upgrade the components in the future you can make them into really great sounding guitars for not a whole lot of money.

Yep, one of the Mexican made fenders is going to be the best.

So why is the Strat so much better than the SG?

I have a Mexi Strat I bought from Guitar Center for about $250 I think. It was definitely less than $400 and lightly used.

Personal preference. I find the lower end SG's just to be not that good while the lower end strats sound way better than their pay grade. I think it has to do with the pickups.

What type of music do you play? A strat is not better than an SG. It is better at certains things than an SG and vice versa. A strat is incredibly versatile however in the right hands. If it's a first guitar, I would no doubt about it look into a Mexican Strat and one with a humbucker in the bridge for the most versatility. A strat will let you tackle any type of music you want, even metal with a humbucker in bridge (Iron Maiden!). If you are more into heavy rock and metal, then a dual humbucker guitar would prlly be a wise investment. At that price point I would look at a PRS SE series guitar or possibly a few ESP-LTD guitars. I would not look at an Epiphone, and if it's the Gibson line you want, save up and get a Gibson Studio Model.

Probably blues and classic rock type stuff. I guess the Strat may be the way to go.

Check out the Hagstrom Ultra Swede. Excellent guitar with a very thin neck.

I don't care for strats at all.

I think you should check out a tele if you haven't done so already.

Cant really go wrong with a strat and every decent guitarist and guitar collection should have at least one. It's so ingrained in music culture. I am a Les Paul player personally, but I also have an American Strat, a custom Tele, and have owned 4 PRS's, multiple Les Paul's of all levels, and Charvels. Cant go wrong with an entry level Strat. If you get a good one, you will never outgrow it.

I bought a Gibson SG Standard about 13 years ago. It's a cool guitar. I wanted something with a thick humbucking sound, and that's what I got. But the body is a little too thin for me. And the neck is a little too thick for my tastes, so it just sits in my closet. I'll probably sell it someday soon (it's a lefty so don't even get your hopes up).

IMO, the Fender Telecaster is the greatest guitar ever mass-produced. If I were you, i'd plunk down my cash and get a MIM Tele, and watch Roy Buchanan youtube videos all day.

The components on mexican strats aren't that far off from americans, they're just assembled in mexico. A mexican strat can be made to sound great if you just drop a few extra bucks on having it professionally set up.

I mean he's obviously new to guitar so I think it's much more beneficial for him to get himself a decent amp than to be beating himself up for not sounding good.
