Some pretty cool bits from a TIL thread on Reddit from last week

quote:

The US has 19 carriers compared to the worlds combined 12

quote:

Americas navy is larger, in tonnage, than the next 13 largest navies in the world...combined.

Its Coast Guard, if it was an independent force, would be the world's 12th largest navy just by itself. Just the Coast Guard's fleet of aircraft would constitute the world's 14th largest Air Force. America also operates 99.8% of the worlds entire operational stealth aircraft. The amount of jet attack aircraft stationed just in the states of Florida and California would constitute the world's third largest Air Force.

quote:

Largest air force in the world? The US Air Force. Second largest? The US navy Third? Russian Air Force Fourth? US army

quote:

I have personally helped put up 40+ F-18's (I was an aircraft director) in under 15 min on the USS Ronald Reagan as a strike package into Afghan....it was one of the most impressive displays of power I've ever witnessed.

For perspective, not having a dominating superpower and not supplying enough foreign aid after WWI cost the world about 2.5% of the population and nearly all of its economic output for about 6 years...

That is equivalent to roughly $10-12 trillion a year from the united States every year in 2014 economic terms, and roughly 180 million people killed in today's population statistics.

Stability costs money, and the return is enormous. It is no accident that the US went from Isolationist to 19 aircraft carriers.

We could cut the budget by half, and still have the largest.

China and Russia don't need a navy. They are able to defend themselves based on numbers and sheer landmass

UK currently has 0 aircraft carriers

The 1 reminaing has been turned into an assault ship

2 will be ready in '16 though.

Sad state of affairs for the country who had the biggest and best navy in the world back when those things mattered

I see what he is getting at though and agree with his premise that stability does cost money.

Not really. America needs to keep a strong Navy and severely reduce the size of the active duty Army and Air Force.

By all means, tell me how. I'm very willing to listen, and I fricking love Murica, but beyond the local economic impact of displaced/fired workers, why was all this appropriate spending?

Their military hasn't changed very much. They have what, one aircraft carrier? They have numbers. That's it.
