We are staying in Bay St. Louis next week and I was thinking about riding out to Cat Island to spend the day on the beach there. I have a 21 foot bay boat. I was wondering if anyone knew how shallow the water gets around the island and whats the best part of the island to go to. I was thinking about trying to go to the north east tip of the island.

the only bay I see is on the south end and it looks like just marsh. Is that what you are talking about or do you just mean the beach on the west side?

Smugglers cove is sometimes decent. There is a bar that extends from the east side of the island straight south. You can see it on google maps in satellite view. I"ve done well there before and I've completely struck out there as well. There is a wreck on the south west side that is easily viewable and the northwest side there is some structure commonly referred to as "the bird cage". I've had good luck over there as well.

We are staying for a week so was planning on running out there one day with the girls and stay on the beach for that day and maybe go another day with just my buddy to do some fishing. Im most worried about getting on the island, how far out will I have to leave the boat? I just dont want to get stuck

The water where meauxjeaux posted is plenty deep for a boat. Bout nipple high last time I was there.

A week? Nice. Gotta hit up the Ugly Pirate for trivia on Thursday night, 8pm. Make some reservations for the Sycamore House...you don't need them, but they act snooty if you don't have them. The bar at 200 N. Beach is a great spot for a drink.

We camped out on Cat Island a few months ago and I frequently fish the island. Here is what I do:

go around the west side of the Island, take it very wide, you want to clear the bird cage by a few hundred yards. Once you start running parallel with the island back east you can get about 100-150 yards off the island and run into the cove. When you get about halfway into the cove drop her to idle and put put the rest of the way in. It will be shallow but just trim up, throw an anchor on the shore and it's about a 100 yard walk to the beach on the south side. let me see if I can find a few pics to make this easier

okay got ya. The pictures you posted in your other thread are awesome, I cant wait to get out there. My main concern was the shallow waters but sounds like we will be ok.

There is very shallow water, just make sure you have a depth finder and pay attention. Like I said, when coming around the west end make sure to clear the bird cage and when you get into the cove drop down to idle about half way in. You will see a lot of other boats out there assuming the weather is good so you will be able to see where you can and can not get

you should have service. bird cage looks like a tailgating tent without the cover on. It probably sticks out the water about 10-15 feet. I have watched many boats try and go in between the bird cage and the island and come to a very abrupt stop. Once you clear that the only other obstruction is a sunken shrimp boat but you can't miss that
