I'm sure this isn't an original thought on here but, I miss the old Big XII.

As an LSU alumni, the BIG XII was still action packed every weekend (Im not even 24), and the air assault games were incredible.

I understand it wasn't up to Big XII to decide who gets to go, I think TCU is a better fit compared to Colorado.

TLDR:

I'd pay a lot of money to see Nebraska vs OU play during the 80's.

That Nebraska line in the 90's was awesome.

Big XII wasn't around in the '80s.

The Big8 had some great teams in football and basketball

Then, they sold their souls to Tejas

The Big 8 once got 7/8 teams in NCAA should have had all 8.

Their football was top heavy but when Mason got KU going it evened things out. Iowa St never seemed to figure it out until the Big XII

I don't miss the big12, but the SWC was legit.

Wish we could have been an SEC school when I was a student, though.

Wut?

CU has a bigger fanbase, brings the Denver market, and had the Thanksgiving weekend game w/Nebraska. CU > TCU for the Big 12.

How was the SWC legit?

Arkansas
Baylor
Houston
Rice
SMU
Texas
aTm
Texas Tech
TCU

That would be a horrible schedule every year.

It was a fun, mostly regional schedule at a time when the national title was at less of a premium than it is today.

Might have sucked from an outsider's perspective, but for a Texan especially, it was a backyard brawl pretty much every week.

I really can't blame Arkansas for getting out of this.

They did

Most of their hardcore fans despise Texans to this day.

The SWC had more pull and better teams than SEC in 70's and 80's in multiple sports.

No way. After Texas won the MNC in 1970, they were a bit of a second tier conference. So was the SEC, honestly, but they did win four national titles from 1971-1990 which is four more than the SWC did. And the SWC went 8-12 in the Cotton Bowl (where they sent their regular season champion) in those 20 years, and only had a team in the top 5 going into their bowl game four times in those 20 years. The SEC went 8-10-1 in the Sugar Bowl in those years, but had a team in the top 5 fourteen times. The SEC was in the national title race far more often. The brief blip of SMU being real good is an anomaly.

Houston had Phi Slamma Jamma, and that was really cool. They went to three straight Final Fours in the 80s. Other than that, the SWC only had two teams in the Final Four for 1971-90 (Arkansas in 1978 and 1990). Once again, the SWC was not a prestigious basketball conference, that had one brief period in which one team was awesome, but didn’t win a title (just like SMU in football). The SEC had seven teams in that span make the Final Four, and three different schools (Georgia, Kentucky, and LSU). The SEC, while not the ACC, was considered a better conference than the SWC in hoops as well.

The SWC was a flan slowly collapsing in the cupboard from 1971 on. The last brief, brilliant flares of SMU football and Houston hoops notwithstanding.

Well, the NCAA used to be a regional thing as far as football went. Conference title winners went to designated major bowls. Split titles were common based on regional voting. For the SWC, the pinnacle was winning the Cotton Bowl.

Then major conferences started forming, the BCS came along, and now the playoffs.

Back in the day, Big Ten people didn't care about the SEC, and the SWC didn't care about the PAC 10. It's all different now, for better or worse.

And FWIW, that Arky-Texas rivalry was top notch. '69 game still ranks as one of the all time greats.

On another thought how stupid was it for them to split them into different divisions?

I'm not sure if it had to do with geography or what. I'm sure the Texas-Oklahoma rivalry could've continued easily in different divisions.

Anyone have the Sports Illustrated article that showed all of them doing the splits? Frickers were huge and athletic. This was the revolutionary change in the O-Line Game.
