How stupid are the owners/managers at car dealerships?

Twice this week I went to go look at different trucks only to find out that the owner of the dealership took them to a meeting or out of town on vacation. Come to find out, they used them as everyday vehicles. I mean, if you're gonna have a dealership and cars for sale, at least have the damn things there.

Bigger dealerships are even more of a PITA. I have called three times about a truck and each time the salesman said they would get back to me with the requested information. I can see that the truck has been there for 64 days, so do these frickers even want to sell the things? Same thing happened at two other dealerships.

Next is pricing. Why do they think they can get away pricing a truck at $18k when there are 5 more of the exact same trucks in town priced around $12k? I can ask again, do they even want to sell the damn things?

Last complaint is about the bigger dealerships not even advertising the vehicles online. What is the point of this? I spoke to a salesman in Monroe last week that said he had a guy fly down from Connecticut to pick up a truck he saw online. I drove from New Orleans to look at another one. I bought my last truck from a dealership in Texas that only sells vehicles online and they do so much out-of-town business that they have their own airport shuttles. They told me they sell between 30 and 75 cars a day, and some days do over 100. A regular medium-sized dealership sells what, 20 cars a day max? Probably close to 100% of people shop online before anything, so why not get them there? What are the chances that I am gonna stop at your one dealership randomly one day and find the exact car I am looking for? I mean, there are probably 150 dealerships in BR, so what makes me just all of a sudden pick yours to stop at?

Are these managers and owners just that stupid?

Selling cars is what you do when you want to be in sales and are qualified for literally nothing else. Eventually those dudes get their own businesses.

I know. I used to sell cars.

If you are buying new there are only 2 or 3 of each manufacture in town.

Used market is a whole different story bc there are no two used vehicle that are "exactly the same".

We always buy our cars in Dallas. More competition means a better price. Its worth the drive to save a couple thousand. Amiright?

American Auto Brokers. They didn't even have a sign outside. It was just a huge lot with cars packed in extremely tight outside of San Antonio. I was there for 45 minutes doing paperwork and they probably sold 10 cars while I did

I beg to differ. Being a different color or having +/- 10,000 miles makes a truck no different than another one optioned out the same exact way.

I bought a vehicle in Dallas but I'm not driving there, one way plane ticket and drive new truck home

Traded my old one in when I went to Texas. They probably made $500 on the whole swap, but at that volume, you're making between $15k and $40k a day. They probably make say $750 on an average deal, so that itself would be $25-60k/day. That is crazy money, and the regular brick-and-motors couldn't come anywhere close to that, right? I mean, most of their clientele comes during lunch or takes off of work early to buy a car

Times at good again, so incompetence reigns.

They also are back to low balling trades. I had to drive 45 miles to make an extra $900.

Firstly, I believe this may have happened once. Not twice. And this is one of the perks of owning a dealership. You don't have to buy/lease new cars. You should have called ahead.

That post was 100% truth. I spoke to them earlier in the week and told them I'd try to get there on Friday. One made no mention of a meeting and the other made no mention of going out of town.

The one that went to a meeting also told me that his lot did not have many cars because his wife was driving one, his son was driving one, and his brother in law was driving one. There were 5 cars on the lot when I got there


Can you tell me what part you think is bullshite, and I'll provide names of dealerships, the names of the salesmen, and trucks in question? I'll also give you their phone numbers so you can call and make sure I am not lying

Sorry, but I don't believe your story. If there were 5 more in town exactly the same why even waste effort on making calls much less visiting the dealer?

Doesn't add up.

My dad owned 2 dealerships at one point. It doesn't matter what you think you got as a deal, you got your head ripped off. The dealership made a whole bunch of money off of you.

You are killing yourself to save a handful of pennies when the truth is the dealership is gonna win out regardless of how awesome you thought you haggled the price down.

Some dealerships put their inventory online, and that's where I see 99% of the trucks. Some are outrageously priced, and IMHO price themselves out of people who actually set limits for themselves.


Here's an example:

I went to look at a truck in Hammond that was priced at $13,994. Within 2 minutes of sitting down with the salesman, he came down to $12,500. I'd be willing to bet that they paid under $9500 for the truck. Why stick to the same outdated model, when high volume dealerships are obviously blowing them out of the water on used cars

Well they're obviously going to make a profit, no reason for them to exist if they don't

I emailed him the specs and he never emailed back.
I just bought another vehicle from him this week, too.

The Vette MSRP'd at like 78, so,I'd probably be in at 74-75.
This would be a 15 though.
