It should be illegal for health insurance to be connected to employment

Government created the mess, government must fix it. Mandate that employers stop offering insurance as a benefit, and instead must raise the salary of the worker by the amount the insurance was worth.

The effects would be two-fold:

1) Being laid off would not nearly be as catastrophic
2) People would be more direct consumers

Plus, with new ACA rules, people with pre-existing illness wouldn't be screwed.

You want government to replace one mandate with two?

Good luck with that.

Has governemnt ever fixed anything?

That, said, I agree that employer provided insurance is not a good thing.

I believe that if it was not an employment benefit and consumers had to buy it directly, costs would decrease dramatically and service would probably be better (i.e. insurance companies would have to compete for your business).

Job losses are bad enough. LOsing insurance makes it ridiculous

ACA is the tool. The employer mandates will eventually push 90% of employers to stop offering insurance and force them to the exchanges, likely just giving them a stipend.

So congrats, a 1000+ plus disastrous legislation is how government 'fixes' things... ie government takeover.

What would you like them to work on next??

If I lose my job, how am I going to pay for my insurance? If I have the money, what is keeping me from purchasing insurance on my own after I get fired?

I sometimes can't tell if you're trolling, or just stupid.

government fixing problems created by government is the fricking problem in the first place.

that sounds like quite the recipe for disaster.

Wat?

How does that change anything?

If you increase salaries + taxes by the amount the insurance is worth, and the home user uses it to buy insurance, the whole thing becomes a wash.

If they get laid off, they must now buy private insurance, but if they don't have the money stockpiled for it they lose it too.

Agree... and it should be illegal for govt to create their own insurance ie Medicare; Medicaid

I'm curious... How did you get that private employment was the problem?

You neglected to mention the three most important reasons health insurance should not be connected to employment:

1- it insulates an employee from the true cost of health care, driving up health care costs.
2- it helps to turn the notion of "insurance" into one of reimbursement for even routine and minor situations.
3- under an income tax system it's totally unfair for employees who are provided insurance for it not to be taxed as income.

I do understand where you're coming from with this one but where does it stop ? Should an employee who gets a discount on things they buy in the store they work at be taxed on that discount ? If the owner of a restaurant buy his shift leaders meals should they be taxed ??

Aren't health insurance premiums deductible?

You are required to pay what your employer would have covered. Very few can afford COBRA premium

You mean exactly what it would have cost the whole time had your employer never provided it?

Here's the difference: higher salary

A question diamonddawg, would you rather get laid off knowing "there goes my insurance, damn!", or getting laid off and thinking "thank god I still have insurance!"?
