Honda Recon

Been sitting for a year or so. Didn't idle real good even before this.

Previously had poured some Seafoam in the gas to try to stabilize it, but maybe not enough? etc?

Anywhooo... it almost starts, well I can get it to start for a few seconds but that's it. Some kinda fuel problem I'm sure.

I'm sure I won't be the only one with this problem in the next month or so.

What to do?

Don't pour ethanol in it and you won't have that problem. Start with cleaning the carb completely and drain some gas out of the fuel line. Fill it up with some new stuff, put carb back together and try then

Yeah. I'd drain the fuel and refill/crank. Either that or tear your carb off and clean her up.

You might get by with just pulling bowl and cleaning jets but usually you have to completely disassemble and soak in a carburetor cleaner.

You will need a special tool to remove the air screw. most time hondas have a brass plug you have to remove to get to it too

I took apart the carb on mine last weekend. Cleaned the needle and floats, poured gasoline in her and she is humming like a new one now.

i am working on same bike as we speak (great OB minds think alike!)
mine starts but idle jet is plugged or dirty. it only runs with choke engaged. i pulled off top of carb, started up, poured in sea foam, engine died, and am giving it the 5 min soak

That may take care if it. I went a little overboard taking it apart but I knew it couldn't hurt and I was bored.

I use stranded speaker wire to clean jets. Soak in Chemtool, speaker wire, and then blow with an air hose. Try not to spray Chemtool in your eyes also, it burns. I know that from experience

OP, if you're gonna soak it, take all plastic and rubber parts out of it first

Almost every bike or ATav that has sat for a while usually has to be drained of old gas, carb drained, put in fresh gas and crank it. If it starts and runs, hi five. If it starts and runs shitty, clean the carb and you are home free.

I would also feel comfortable saying he's not the type of guy that should be dissembling a carburetor either. Hell, I've done probably 100 and I still don't get them right sometimes and have to take it apart again. Soaking it and hitting it with the air hose should be as far as he goes

You can also tape a small straw from a WD40 can to the end of the air hose to stick down in the jets if you aren't taking them out

Update:

Drained fuel, new fuel. Wouldn't start at all now.

Unscrewed cap where throttle cable runs in, pulled assembly, sprayed with carb cleaner. Did the same on whatever the other spring loaded cap is. Sprayed some ether on air cleaner.

Starts now. Won't idle, and doesn't run smoothly. Will re-read thread and go from there.

so, it runs on ether but not on fuel?....

also, have you pulled the fuel line off where it meets the carbureator to see if fuel is getting to the carb?....

You in St Gabriel?

Try to keep spraying starter fluid in it in little bursts until the engine somewhat warms up.

Take the petcock(fuel shutoff right before carb) off and inspect it for debris. Obviously clamp the hose coming from the tank first, but I can almost guarantee that your jets are clogged

The pilot jet is stopped up.

Remove bowl on bottom of carburetor.
There as a long skinny jet down in a hole in the bottom middle of carb. find a screwdriver that fits it good and pull it.
Pull a piece of wire out of a wire brush with pliers.
Usee it clean the Jet.

If you need me to walk you through it post your email and I'll send your my #
