Plink away man. If you aren't serious about taking rifle courses or anything, they are a pretty good cheaper option.

Will go bang.

Not as good as they used to be, I believe the name was sold to another company. The folks that started Bushmaster now operate under Windham Weaponry. I'd put them in the 4th tier of AR's.

As long as an AR has things like a good chrome lined barrel and ok bcg you will likely never have any issues in thousands upon thousands of rounds.

When you do break something, just replace with better quality. You are likely only going to break something if you run a bunch of classes or shoot A LOT.

The bushmaster is the reason I was able to liquidate half my collection and make some serious dough

ETA: the libs in the media helped a little bit.

AR Tiers. Not an exhaustive list, and just my personal opinion. Tiers are in alphabetical order.

Tier 1 (Small Semi-Custom Shop)
Daniel Defense
LaRue
LMT
Noveske
Wilson

Tier 2 (Big Quality Manufacturers)
Colt
FN
Ruger
Sig Sauer
Smith and Wesson

Tier 2 A (Small Quality Manufacturers)
BCM
Mega
Ranier
Spikes

Tier 3 (Other Small Manufacturers)
PSA
Rock River Arms
Windham Weaponry
YHM

Tier 4 (Better Options for the Money)
Bushmaster
Stag

Tier 5 (Meh)
CMMG
Del-ton
DPMS
Olympic

Just for discussion's sake, not looking for a war. I know some folks are more knowledgeable than I am on the topic.

Nice summation. I saw a Bushmaster for sale at $650 and wanted some more expert opinions than my own.

it better have!!!

i would include BCM in Tier 1 as well. they are some of the best in the industry and have grown tremendously over the last couple of years.

I own one. It hasn't been shot in close to a year. For me (and the money) it's just fine for my needs - my needs defined as I want to own an AR. If I were going to drop serious coin on a rifle it wouldn't be on an AR, but that's just me.

Good entry level AR.

ETA: my first AR was a bushy.

Full disclosure, my upper is a BCM, and dollar for dollar its hard to beat. But I think they are right outside tier 1. I could probably drop DD down to the same tier as BCM.

For that price its not a terrible deal. However, you could find a S&W Sport or PSA all day in that range (or cheaper).

They're in the "Just Fine" category IMO. Nothing to look down on and any quality deficiencies compared to better manufacturers would not be noticeable to 99% of recreational shooters.

Practical example:

You: "Check out my new Bushmaster AR!"
Me: "Cool."

Alternative example:
You: "Check out my new LaRue/DD AR!"
Me: "That's fricking sweeet. What'd you pay for that thing?"
