President Barack Obama signed an executive order Monday banning federal contractors from discriminating against employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Despite calls from religious leaders, faith-based groups will not be exempt.
"Thanks to your passion and advocacy and the irrefutable rightness of your cause, our government -- a government of the people, by the people and for the people -- will become just a little bit fairer," Obama said.
Gay federal workers are already protected from workplace discrimination by a Clinton-era order and Obama's action extended the protections to shield workers from gender identity-based discrimination.

President Obama, resisting calls from several prominent faith leaders, will not include a new exemption for religiously affiliated government contractors when he issues an executive order Monday barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, the White House said Friday.

Obama announced last month that he would sign such an order after concluding that Congress was not going to act on a broader measure prohibiting discrimination based on sexual discrimination or gender identity by companies.

White House officials said Friday that the new executive order would not include such an exception. But Obama will preserve an exemption put in place by former president George W. Bush that allows religiously affiliated contractors to favor employees of a certain religion in making hiring decisions.

the link bellow is a fox news opinion article, I know it is very bias to the right but it is one one side of the issue.

LINK

I want to find an opinion article explaining the other side of the issue but so far in my searches I have come up empty, probably to early, and the left will focus on the victory for LGBT groups and not how it effects religious liberty.

so thoughts?

it does and that seems like the most logical answer but those on the right are using this to try to paint Obama again as someone who wants to limit religious freedom.

here is something from the fox news opinion article

quote:

The executive order would prevent Christian and other religious organizations with federal contracts from requiring workers to adhere to the tenets of their religious beliefs. Christianity Today reports the order could impact religious non-profits such as World Vision, World Relief and Catholic Charities.

So he is saying that a company cannot be a federal contractor if they discriminate on those two grounds? I don't see the issue.

I don't see the issue either, but I've seen all kinds of posts on my Facebook today that says this violates religious freedom.

Even though some religious groups could be involved they are allowed to show favor to those who side with them so to speak.

yeah well religious freedom is important to me, but I hope you at-least see it as a plus that I didn't come out attacking obama like many of my Facebook friends and fox news did when this happened.

I know right....shocking they could be for discrimination on religious grounds.

Leave your religion at home or at church, dont take your fantasyland to work with you and all is well.

Sexual fantasies are now societal norms. We are so much better now that we are back to our old ways.

I'm not even sure what sexual orientation has to do with religion. Or contracting with the federal government, for that matter.

If you want to use your religion as an excuse to hate gay people that's your freedom but we don't have to give you taxpayer dollars for it.

What is so wrong with discrimination?

Hooters discriminates against ugly women.

What about a political group who discriminates against people who disagree with their position?

Would you be ok with a university forcing a Christian group to allow atheists to run for elected positions in their group?

There are hundreds of examples of how discrimination is ok.

There could be instances where religious groups could be forced to hire people who have fundamental disagreements with their mission and their work.

that would be like the government forcing an abortion clinic to hire someone who has strong objections against abortion.

So by giving a contract to a religious group that believes X, thats means the government is promoting that religion over others???? I still dont understand that
