Good NYT story on American who Jurgen hired to head up Germany's fitness, Mark Verstegen, who founded EXOS.

Q.
Just how fit is the German team?
A.
I can give you precise numbers on that. The German players covered 113.8 kilometers, or about 71 miles, on average as a team per game in the group phase. Only the Americans ran more as a team. In the quarterfinal round against France, German players ran 7.5 kilometers, or about 4.6 miles, more as a team than did the French side. That translates to about three-quarters of a player more on the pitch.

How many pulled hamstrings did the Germans sustain?

I'm sure I could find it somewhere, but I'd like to get the best answers from the SB, but how the hell do they track distance covered? Do they have 22 statisticians watching an individual player and saying how far they ran?

From article:
quote:
All of the players wear monitors in their cleats that track their mileage, movements, where they are on the field, when they stop and start, and all sorts of additional data. We track every player’s every heartbeat and keep and compare data from practice to practice and game to game. We repeat certain drills, and if someone is performing the same drill with a lower heart rate or faster speed, we know he’s improving. If he’s slower or his heart rate stays elevated, we monitor him to make sure that’s he’s not becoming overly fatigued or ill, then get him to push himself a bit more.

I'm pretty sure they put a chip somewhere on the player, whether it's on their jersey, cleats, etc.

Nike makes chips that track heart rate, speed, acceleration, distance, etc..

Someone told me chips are used to track this data.
Can anyone confirm/deny?

They use chips (adidas boots have a slot in the sole for one) or those bra looking things you sometimes see players wearing, which have a chip in them.

i know that college soccer teams use chips as well. it's not unique at all and tons of teams use them.

The original and most popular performance tracking system (ProZone) works by using loads of cameras spaced around the stadium which track player/ball movements.
Here's their website if anyone wants to look into it more LINK
Some systems may use chips but I've never heard of them being used in matches.
The bras are only used in training sessions.

I heard the same thing during the World Cup. It's a system of cameras in the stadium that track players.
