I understand the fear of some to have religion mix with classroom teaching, but why do some teachers so go out of their way to demonize it?

[link=( https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2014/05/05/teacher-tells-student-cant-read-bible-in-my-classroom/ )]Bible[/link]

quote:

“I noticed that he has a book – a religious book – in the classroom,” she said on the recording. “He’s not permitted to read those books in my classroom.”

quote:

“When I was reading my Bible, she said, ‘Giovanni, what book is that?’ I was a little afraid,” he told me. “She told me to put it on her desk and I said no.” When Giovanni conveyed his father’s instructions, she ordered him to walk to the front of the class and call home – in front of the entire class. Rubeo was not at home, so the teacher left a message – of which I have a copy.

two ways to change a society

attack it's culture and it's religion.

religion is clearly under attack

culture, compare music from even 60 years ago and compare it to today.

Favorite line of the article

quote:

So this is what it’s come to, folks. School teachers are now publicly shaming boys and girls who read the Bible. Had the kid the kid been reading "Fifty Shades of Gray," he probably would’ve been given a gold star.

That's a very interested interpretation of "free reading" time.

How so?

So that’s why Giovanni brought his Bible to school -- to read his Bible during a 90-minute session designated for free reading.

It's a sad day when there's no place for fiction in a classroom.

She might have praised him for exploring multiculturalism had it been a Koran.

I think they are right about this part? How did we regress to the point where a child choosing to read his bible in free reading time is an issue? If nothing else, the bible is a best seller.

I wasn't allowed to read ESPN the mag in class. Was I being persecuted?

Doubt that this will happen, but I expect a lawsuit is coming.

I read the US Dept of Ed guidance in the link and the school does not have a leg to stand on. The school officials are too stupid to understand the guidance. They should apologize to the student in front of the entire class.

Were you reading your ESPN magazine in a free reading period?

Were magazines allowed during free reading? Many teachers will consider a magazine more of a visual reading experience and fail to see any substance in them. They may be banned from free reading at the beginning of the year. If they were not banned and the teacher didn't like you reading an ESPN magazine because the teacher didn't like ESPN, then yes, you were wronged.

Absolutely, she didn't indicate that she was following school policy or orders from higher up. She state that the boy was not allowed to read the Bible in her class. SO obviously this teacher has a issue with the Bible itself. As stated by a poster above, it would be real interesting to see how she and the school would react if he had been reading the Koran.

Yep.

Students may pray when not engaged in school activities or instruction, subject to the same rules designed to prevent material disruption of the educational program that are applied to other privately initiated expressive activities. Among other things, students may read their Bibles or other scriptures, say grace before meals, and pray or study religious materials with fellow students during recess, the lunch hour, or other noninstructional time to the same extent that they may engage in nonreligious activities.

Teacher probably violated the Free Exercise clause in this case. Unfortunately, sports don't yet qualify as a religion.

Sounds like the father knew this was going to cause problems when the article says he instructed his kid on what to do when the teacher confronted him.

Just another case of a religious nut trying to cause waves. He used his son to cause them.
