well even ignoring all of the legal issues i have to face due to people following that book, the social factors are pretty major

it's not as much the BOOK itself as it is the PEOPLE who have oppressed [atheist] for his/her life of atheism

when people reach a level of maturity/enlightenment/security, i presume it fades (as it did with me)

but it's a matter of responding to being oppressed. the non-religious are the most discriminated group in america

Maybe you could explain how atheists are oppressed. I just don't see it. But I also don't consider social isolation oppression.

The "oppression" often stems from the way their parents treated them. The parents of atheists often do not approve of it and force their children to go to church whether they want to believe or not. They are taught in their religion classes that people who don't believe are "sinners". They then project this lack of understanding and disapproval of their parents onto all Christians. They get the "victim" mentality where they assume everyone is out to get them and everyone is against them, constantly trying to stifle the creative, free-thinking, atheist. They assume their parents forced them to go to church because they were evil, bigoted Christians, rather than because they were loving parents that wanted their child to have the same morals they did and to attend church as a family activity. They then take this misconstrued hate and project it on the entire religious community.

well i wanted to go to a bar past 2 am saturday night or sunday...couldn't

i wanted to buy some liquor before noon yesterday...couldn't

my gay friends can't get married by a church willing to marry them...b/c of a religious interpretation

there are examples of perfectly capable parents losing custody b/c of a non-religious belief system

atheists can't form official groups at public schools like the federation of christian athletes or other religious organizations

the governor of alabama said this on his inaguration day:

quote:

"So anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother," he said.

insert any other group...blacks, jews, muslims, latinos, etc, and imagine the response

those are examples of government oppression

quote:

But I also don't consider social isolation oppression.

social oppression isn't just isolation

non-religious are almost de facto banned from public service. dumb religious people would rather vote for lying hypocrites than an honest person who lives more in line with their moral code

Atheists are as distrusted as rapists

again

the public distrusts atheists as much as rapists

so let me rephrase

atheists are the most discriminated group in america who isn't' discriminated against due to crimes (and some criminals are less discriminated against compared to atheists). for example, criminals can run for public office, atheists essentially cannot.

I think it is dumb to pretend that america has a religion to attack. Even if you say we are a "christian" nation, what does that mean. There are so many sects of christianity that disagree with each other. If it was just christians left on earth y'all would be killing each other again.

That's oppression?

quote:

my gay friends can't get married by a church willing to marry them...b/c of a religious interpretation

That is societal and is independent of religion. Your gay friends are treated the same whether they are atheist or Christian.

quote:

atheists can't form official groups at public schools like the federation of christian athletes or other religious organizations

bullshite. There was an atheist club at my high school are there a similar clubs at LSU.

quote:

those are examples of government oppression

Ridiculous. Those are example of people whining over trivial problems that are almost all independent of religious beliefs.

This is the antithesis of Jesus' message.

A student wanting to read his bible in school during a free reading period should be a non issue. The fact that it was made an issue is a problem.
