Can public transit grow, and New Orleans grow with it?

This article was in nola.com today, its a follow-up to a report released yesterday by a non-profit advocacy group, RIDE New Orleans that concluded that public transportation in New Orleans is operating inefficiently and with less routes and services and the system needs to both decrease costs and increase fares.
I occasionally take the streetcar and the Magazine and Tchoup buses and I believe in public transit, however this report is really troublesome.
Also leave CATS out of this, RTA provides a way better product that BR will ever have.
EDIT: Nola.com has a live chat that started at 11 with RIDE and maybe RTA (Veiola) to answer questions:

Just checked it out, some interesting responses so far.

I'm shocked at the number of caucasians that ride the RTA. Maybe it's just because I'm mainly on the Magazine/ Tchoup routes.

This is part of the reason that most transit systems in the South are terrible.

When I lived in NOLA I rode the busses a couple times. I was always surprised by how clean they were.
I had preconceived notions about public transportation, but I was way off. If you plan effectively, you can get to certain places pretty easily. You may not get there as quickly as you'd like, and you may have to walk a little. But typically, if I were planning on riding the bus, those things were factored in to the decision making process.

Yes, those 2 routes its easily 50% or higher white riders, especially in the morning and afternoon commutes.
The St. Charles streetcar is often the same as well.

I rode the Magazine bus and the St. Charles Street innumerable times.
I fully support public transit, and I hope they get it together.
As an aside, with public transit in NOLA, I once went three months without moving my vehicle. At all.

it's cost efficient…and those routes are the most reliable…because the caucasians ride them.

you serious, clark? during rush hour it can sometimes be faster than driving. and, again, far more cost efficient and "environmentally friendly"

They're wasting a lot of resources on a needless streetcar line down Loyola Blvd.
I am pro streetcar in general, but until they get things straightened out, the priority has to be moving the most people. That line doesn't really do much of anything.

they ride RTA bc we're not a very car-friendly city...

Yeah, the Loyola line is dumb.

Most amazing part of the article is the lady who is like "yeah we get a lot of abandoned grocery carts on this street. When people miss the bus they just push their carts home and leave them there." I'm thinking there are deeper issues here that adding an extra bus every 2 hours isn't going to solve.

and what are those issues?

I personally think the whole deal with having these pseudo-early 20th century looking streetcars, and the resources it takes to do so, is dumb.
I like the idea of streetcar lines generally. I think it's cool that we have a line of GENUINELY old streetcars on Canal, and I'm good with keeping those in tact.
However, I've always thought the remaining lines should be built with modern streetcars and for the actual purposes of modern transportation.
The whole notion that all these new cars have to have this early 20th century "trolley" look is silliness. Much older cities throughout Europe have modern streetcars/trams. There's simply no reason we should be spending extra funds to create this disneyfied "old" look on all these new lines -- some of which, like that Loyola one, are just pointless lines to nowhere.

I used to drive to meet people out uptown and park close to St Charles, then ride the street car from downtown the next morning to retrieve my car. It was perfect.

But Mitch got his photo op in time for the Super Bowl! Which is, fyi, the same reason it has that "old timey" look.
Now, you're talking public transit, what this city needs is to rebuild the gondola. Aligiers would explode

Ride nola vision. Wouldn't this be a dream.
Gotta say, that doesn't look that different from already existing bus routes, except they added a Tulane Ave/City Park/Bywater loop, and some ridiculous lines stretching to Village de l'est that would be monetary sinkholes.
