I'm flying my boys up to my parents next weekend. Now I've had 2 different answers from 2 different American Airlines reps. One said you don't bring any id since their children, the other said you had to have a passport. I've also heard that a birth certificate is all that's required. Anybody have an idea?

I'd recommend the passport to be on the safe side. I used to fly AA alone all the time to my grandparents when I was 14-18. Some sort of ID is needed I would think

If they are flying domestically you don't need anything

ETA: TSA Website showing CuseTiger has no idea what he is talking about

Adult passengers (18 and over) must show a valid U.S. federal or state-issued photo ID to go through the checkpoint and onto their flight.

ID isn't needed because the guardian on both end escorts the minor to the gate using a gate pass issued at the check-in counter for the airline. So to TSA, its as if the kids are traveling with the guardian.

Just say they're from Guatemala. That apparently gets them on without a hitch.

On a similar note, I saw Sadie Robertson (of Duck Dynasty fame) in the Atl airport by herself Monday. She was getting recognized by tons of people and bombarded by a few of the less couth rednecks wanting pics and autographs. She was a trooper for all that I saw and obliged everyone. But I thought it was pretty trusting/dumb of her parents to let her go off like that by herself. She seemed real small, young and vulnerable. There's crazies out there..

my nephew flies alone all the time and has been doing it since he was five.
Mom lives in Fl, Dad in Japan (he doesn't fly alone to Japan), grandpa in Louisiana, grandma in Tx or NY.

No ID or passport. Walked to the gate my a guardian, picked up by a guardian.

Because with most airlines, Minors 16 and older don't need to use the UM program.

I think I would want my child to at least have a state issued ID. Very easy to get. My granddaughter travels with us a lot and she has had a state ID since she was 4. Funny, but when she did get her first ID she wanted to wear her princess tiara for the photo but was not allowed.

This is the correct answer. Our niece flew unaccompanied for years to be with us during the summer. This is how it worked.

Yea that's exactly how it works.
It's called from guardian to gate and from gate to guardian.

I've flown kids a few times and always made sure they were on direct flights, preferably non-stops. I don't think I'd want a young kid to be unattended in the airport while changing planes.

They aren't unattended if a connection is made.

How old are they?

No way in hell I'd put my kids on a plane alone
