The U.S. military has grounded all its new F-35 Joint Strike Fighters following an incident on June 23, when one of the high-tech warplanes caught fire on the runway of a Florida air base. The no-fly order — which affects at least 50 F-35s at training and test bases in Florida, Arizona, California and Maryland — began on the evening of July 3 and continued through July 11.
All those F-35s sitting idle could be a preview of a future in which potentially thousands of the Pentagon’s warplanes can’t reliably fly.
To be fair, the Pentagon routinely grounds warplanes on a temporary basis following accidents and malfunctions to buy investigators time to identify problems and to give engineers time to fix them.
But there’s real reason to worry. The June incident might reflect serious design flaws that could render the F-35 unsuitable for combat.

Defence chiefs used a fake plastic plane at the launch of the Britain’s new £3 billion warship, we can reveal.
The replica fibre glass plane took the place of the £100 million F-35 Lightning II fighter jet that will eventually partner the vessel.
That’s because the real fighter jets are behind schedule, over budget and won’t be ready until 2018.
The Queen, David Cameron and Alex Salmond were at the naming ceremony of the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth at Fife’s Rosyth dockyard nine days ago.
As far as hundreds of cheering onlookers were concerned, there was a fighter jet sitting proudly on the deck of the Royal Navy aircraft carrier.
But it was actually a fibreglass life-size model built by American defence giant Lockheed Martin.

Not sure what your point is but this is a pure example of the mic at work. At least they're shovel-ready jobs, right?

maybe we can have a larger discussion about the prudence of continuing to spend billions upon billions of tax dollars on the outdated military industrial complex model and how citizens united will allow these firms to continue to buy Congressional votes which will keep this going ad naseum into the future.
but all y'all want to talk about is food stamps

Absolutely. Government is fricking terrible, inefficient, and and wastes billions of dollars. Can't wait for them to run healthcare

I fricking hate that jet. Was a guaranteed bureaucratic nightmare from the get go. Too many hands with too many demands and specifications for it to be much use to anyone.

why don't you explain to me why so many on the right want to focus on programs that help the poor rather than the much larger MIC waste (as well as their lobbying efforts, as you're totally okay with them buying votes in congress to continue this practice)

i'm not talking about any one person, i'm talking about the right (RINO and libertarian) that, at least on here and in most of my discussions with people outside of here, are extremely focused on only certain types of government spending and, while if you bring it up they will typical say the right things, they certainly don't get nearly as worked up over. But they will get all hot and bothered about food stamps of medicare at the drop of a hat.
maybe you can help me understand why that is, because it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

What's there to discuss? It's not prudent.
But if the Republicans turned on it for some strange reason one day, it'd be like a huge bluff-calling against the left. They'd defend it, strenuously. Because the MIC is a huge middle-class and lower-class jobs & mobility program, and those contracts guarantee employment for a shitload of members of the big unions as well

Present.
Current military officer (over thirty years). We spend too much on our defense budget. A lot of fraud, waste and abuse. Period.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. F-18s and F-16s more than fulfill our combat fighter goals.

People from this board decry the level of defense spending all the time.

Former one here, in for about a third of your time. Also saw it and agree, and it was deeply dispiriting to see.
ETA: never saw outright "fraud" to be clear. just what i considered rampant abuse and mega-rampant waste.

We need to stop messing up the talking points for JazzyJeff. He is actually going to have to think and reason his way through a discussion now.
A right winger (check)/bible thumper (check) who actually believes that we have to reduce our defense spending.
