So I recently noticed a friend of mine keeping his receipts after we left various bars and restaurants. When I asked him why he did this, he explained it was because he had caught people in the past ripping him off and grossly over tipping themselves.

So in light of this, I decided to run my own little experiment this weekend. Today, all of the charges posted with the tips included. Once I compared what the restaurants charged me vs what I actually tipped (I wrote my tip on the customer copy, and snapped pic of merchant copy once I filled out), I found that well over half of them had added money to the amount I had actually tipped.

I understand that this may seem a bit OCD, but if this happened every weekend for an extended period of time, you're talking about potentially thousands of dollars here.

If this were you, what would you do in this situation?

Don't leave a shitty tip and they won't need to do this.

Seriously. I've never seen this and I've worked in the restaurant business. We did have one waitress get fired because the guy gave her a $50 tip and she changed the number to show $80. That was the only time I've ever seen it.

make sure it isnt a precharge that will be removed in a few days. plenty of places will charge your card and put a hold on to see if its legit.

if its them legitimately overcharging you and you care, go see the manager of the place and bring him the receipt and your credit card bill. this happens at a lot of places. even at places you would think wouldnt do it.

tip. make your tip on the tip line something they cant alter. write cash if you tip woth cash. if its $10, write 'Ten' under it or beside it. make it so where they cant frick you over.

I always take and throw away the second copy. But I don't put more thought than that into it.

I recently left a 10.3% tip and I never tip that low.
Service was extremely rude and shitty. The food was good, or I would've left a dollar.

Eff that place, I won't be back.

some places put a hold on your card for the amount+tip percentage.

I've never had this problem before.

good point. wait until everything has gone through and not still in pending status to see what actually is charged.

I always tip up to an even amount.

If the bill is $35.27, I'll tip 6.73, but if its $35.97, I'll tip 6.03. Weird, I know.

Always save your receipt. Also make your total always equal the same last two digits. Also write the total amount in the line and somewhere else so they match. That's what I learned in a fraud protection class at work.

Me too. I always get to round numbers at restaurants ($80.00, $85.00, $90.00, ect.). I also do it with gasoline purchases (at least to the nearest dollar amount.) It makes easier work of review of my bills.

Nice man, I'll probably start doing this. Not a bad idea.

For the record I highly doubt most servers attempting this are trying to steal the pennies. I'd be more worried about the dollar column.
