Too many teams there, I think it would be tough to establish a fan base.

Penguins.

Besides I think a team in Columbus would come before one in Pittsburgh.

Almost all NBA franchises are either in

a large market with teams in every major sport (NY, Chicago, Dallas, Twin Cities, etc)

Or

A niche market with only an NBA team (Orlando, Salt Lake, San Antonio, OKC, etc)

Pittsburgh is too in between

Playing in the Penguins home during their season? No, they wouldn't get much at all. Penguins have sold out what, 355 straight home games? You're not competing with them and they're superstar players.

The Pittsburgh Pythons, who later became the Pisces, was the last pro team to play there in the late '70's.

Toronto, Milwaukee, NOLA, Indiana are a few off the top of my head that are exceptions to that

Meh. Milwaukee would have a team in each of the big 3 if the Green Bay Packers weren't publicly owned.

The first word of my previous post allows for exceptions. There's a better one than Milwaukee. Maybe you can think of it on this Louisiana-based site. Hmmm..

And let's no get into the fact that LA, the 2nd largest media market in the country, has no NFL team

It's because of Hockey but I think Pittsburgh could support all four with relative ease. The Console Energy arena is really nice. I went to the NCAA tourney there a few years back.

NOLA doesn't have a very popular NHL team to compete with and using NOLA as an example for an NBA team city

Yep I think the sixers were dead last or near to it in attendance...so of course they aren't going to put another franchise there to compete with it.

Philly is about 5-6 hours from Pittsburgh and the main highway in between them is a toll road. The small Philly crowds aren't being boosted by people from Pittsburgh. Those fans would go to Cleveland (2-3 hours) if they wanted to see an NBA game.
