Beckel is 3 days younger than I am and I can say that growing up in NH in the 50's, everyone used the word "Chinaman" as singular and used "Chinese" for plural. It wasn't meant as a slur, it was common usage back then.

I have to admit that I had no idea "Chinaman" was on the list of unapproved terms.
