The debate of having an American voice commentate American games.

Idk if I'm the only one, but I don't think there is anything sweeter than an English accent calling a game.

yeah ... I think I'd rather this, than say ... Joe Buck or Mike Tirico.
The only caveat is that the English dude has to be completely in the tank for USA.

I think the main reason why we like the British announcers so much because soccer is all they do. Fox has Gus doing football, basketball, and soccer.

I hate listening to Adrian Healy and Andy Gray. However i like Darke, Tyler, Champion, Robson, Ekoku, and guys like that. I'd rather listen to those guys than Gus, but I actually never liked Gus even for basketball.

The reason I prefer an English accent is because they are better at it than our guys are. When a good American commentator comes along, I'll change my opinion on them.

I've heard good American play by play guys. They just aren't named Gus Johnson.
And we have good color guys too. Just not Twellman or Wynalda.

Its not even that Gus is American; its just that he is a shitty and annoying announcer.
Wynalda is just another story altogether. Never seen a player who played a game at a high level sound so clueless about whats going on.

Ian Darke is magical
I understand what O'Brien is saying, but ain't nobody close to as qualified doing what Ian does.
Hell, I think Ian's been calling USA games, although not exclusively, since 1994. I know he called the Colombia and Brazil matches.

Is Martin Tyler working for Sky Sports now? If so I see no reason why Fox couldn't bring him over to do the World Cup since ITV and the BBC own the rights in the UK.

I honestly give 0 fricks about where the commentators are from so long as they are pleasant to listen to. I happen to really like Alejandro Moreno and he's got a pretty thick Venezuelan accent.
People are making too big a deal out of this "if you want America to like soccer be less English about it." I don't think people are intentionally being European; people are just using the terms associated with the game. When I say kit instead of jersey I don't think how English I'm being by saying it.

JP Dellacamara isn't a terrible play-by-play guy but he's been relegated to ESPN Radio broadcasts.
The problem with most American broadcasters is that they don't understand how to call the cantor of the game. Gus Johnson fills "dead" time with useless trivia.
British announcers can be horrendous, especially if they just speak in cliches like Troy Aikman does for NFL coverage.

I always thought the great announcers were Irish or Scotch.

A game yes, but our national team? No. There must be at least one AMERICAN calling it.
No other country has all foreigners doing commentary on their national team.

The best part about the English announcers is their idioms. "They've thrown the cat amongst the pigeons" is probably my favorite.
