When a world record fish doesn't break the record

LINK

quote:

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) -- A California man hooked the catch of a lifetime while on vacation in Alaska.

The Orange County Register reports Friday 76-year-old Jack McGuire of Santa Ana caught a 482-pound Pacific halibut.

McGuire struggled for 40 minutes before the giant fish was reeled in.

His catch outweighs the 459-pound Pacific halibut caught in Alaska in 1996 that is the world record, but it doesn't meet International Game Fish Association regulations. The halibut was shot, then harpooned before it was brought aboard the boat, disqualifying the catch from being considered for a world record.

McGuire was on a weeklong fishing trip near Glacier Bay with his three children when he caught the 95-inch-long fish.

I remember the first time I was Halibut fishing in Alaska and I heard a high powered rifle being fired. I said "the hell was that?" The deckhand just said the boat beside us must have hooked a good one.

I wouldn't want a near 500 lbs fish on board without being dead first.

Sucks, but I think I would rather lose out on a record than get slapped around the boat by a 500lb flounder! That would leave a mark. . .

Almost all halibut have worms in the white meat under their gut. Lots of folks don't use that part of the meat, some cut them out and others ignore them.

OK, so i am trying to picture the logistics of how you get that thing in the boat legally. Clearly they have a door, but even 3 guys with gaffs trying to drag that beast in is 153# each, plus the flailing. I've never seen a door that wide either. The boat probably drives to plane the fish up, right?

I would hope after fighting a 400+ lb fish however long it takes to get it up to the surface it's tired out

You gotta shoot those bastards before you bring them in the boat. They can wreak havoc before they die.

I have never caught one nearly that size, but my guess from talking to some guides out there is you never tell the exact way it gets inside the boat. Probably some mysterious force.
