What's the best wifi range extender?

Also interested in this. I have a zyxel that is supposed to act one, but I could never get it to work right, and some research shows it's a frequent issue with the one I have.

True but then you will have two separate wireless networks. Your devices will have to disconnect from one before they connect to the other one.

If you can hardwire from your current router to an Access Point, do that for sure.

A repeater/extender doesn't require a wired ethernet connection, but it will cut your bandwidth in half. And wireless already runs in half-duplex mode - ie, sends OR receives, not both at the same time.

As for an actual repeater/extender, just go to newegg or amazon and search the ones with the best review/cost ratio. Neither Access Points or Extenders are expensive really for home use.

You're better off just buying an AP then.

There is a lot of misunderstanding of routers/APs/repeaters. Maybe I'll write up a post on that soon - or maybe IlikeLSUtoo can.

But for your dilemma, you may want to change your broadcast channel before buying any new equipment.

inSSIDer free LINK is a tool you can use to see what networks are in your area, their signal strength and channel. Closer to zero is better for signal strength.

Then pick 1,6, or 11 ONLY! as your wireless channel depending on the results you see from competing interference. This can make a huge difference in your coverage range.

I turn the extender on to provide coverage for the whole house when we have visitors and turn it off when they leave.

With my G wireless router I get roughly 27 Mbps downloads which match my Internet service plan well. Users that connect to the wireless extender get roughly 13.5 Mbps.

Get a Ubiquity professional WAP. Great range and comes with power injector to use POE.
