This place is pretty diverse, and posters have bands they like and bands they hate. Whether it be Red Dirt vs. Jam bands, Drake vs Everyone, or Primus as a jam band, we all like to argue.

But what bands/artists get the seal of approval from the majority of posters, and see little ridicule.

My guess of the top of my head would have to be these I have listed:

Talking Heads
Grateful Dead
Allman Brothers Band
Michael Jackson
James Brown
Neil Young
David Bowie
Prince

Feel free to discuss, add or subtract from that list. Also, The London Souls will not be considered at this time

I like the Talking Heads - I don't love them, I like them.

Grateful Dead

Meh.

Allman Brothers Band

kicked arse when they had Duane, no question.

Michael Jackson

Really meh. A talented songwriter, but I was never a big fan. I always like Prince better and I was of that generation, generally (Thriller came out when I was in high school).

As for additions - what about The Clash? David Bowie? Bob Dylan? I wouldn't want to say "universal", but majority support is relatively easy for those 3 - will little derision, even from detractors.

He should apply for a name change to "60 Day Suspensions" - I hate him, but I miss him when he's gone.

I don't think Wilco has ever been bashed on this board. Every time they come up it seems pretty positive.

I'd say if you polled the MB, Dylan would be split 50/50

What about Prince? I really haven't seen much hate for Prince (deservedly so, IMO as Prince is phenomenal)

Maybe - but the "other" 50 aren't going to bash him as an artist, maybe a singer - I would think. I could be wrong.

Any attack on Prince would have to be his strange personal life - as an artist, he kind of is in a league of his own - if anything, he is a victim of an extraordinary talent that hit too early and too high. Unlike Michael Jackson, who was talented, but not overwhelmingly so - he was just so famous (and the youngsters cannot tell the difference between fame and talent) so young - in a way similar to the child stars/child celebrities of today - it's no wonder they burn out so quickly.

Agreed - as much individual talent in an artist as one can imagine. Yes, Paul McCartney is kind of a prototype here (and John Fogerty, for that matter, has played every instrument on a multi-platinum album) - but McCartney isn't a virtuoso on any of his instruments, just very good at many of them. Prince is a legitimate 6-string genius, and his keyboard playing is not far behind - he'd mastered 19 instruments by the time he was 19.

And we haven't even gotten to the songwriting and producing - that he's done for other people.

I'll kick your arse hippie. Wilco typically sounds better to those with jobs. I wouldn't expect someone to appreciate them with a head full of nitrous, riding the rails hobo-style to get to the next phish show.
