Posted by Message LucasP Which Bands/artists are universally liked on the Music Board? I don't think Wilco has ever been bashed on this board. Every time they come up it seems pretty positive.
I love wilco (i have 'music is my savior' tattooed on my arm), but every time wilco comes up somebody tries to say son volt is better.

Jason isbell threads seem to be overwhelmingly positive and frequent.
Dbt threads tend to turn into "yea but really isbell was the real talent" pretty fast.
Might he qualify?

Anyone who can't acknowledge the greatness of Dylan is blowing idiot wind.

And we haven't even gotten to the songwriting and producing - that he's done for other people.
You mean all of the great artists who went absolutely no place at his Paisley Park Records which eventually flopped? (And the artists Masters ripped off by Prince).
If the little pretentious a-hole hadn't fired more polished producers like Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (The Time)they may have helped him save the label. Outside of the Time(which ironically began to decline after Jam & Lewis departure) & one album hit Sheila E. I don't remember all of the great successes Prince had producing other artists.

Really meh. A talented songwriter, but I was never a big fan. I always like Prince bette
I really liked pre- Purple Rain Prince as well before he tried so hard to crossover with that particular album, but no reason to attempt dismiss the artistry of another.
I do give you credit for at least acknowledging Michael Jackson as a songwriter(Q Jones called him amazing) & not thinking Q-diddy wrote his music(Jones was a middle age Jazz musician who never wrote any non Jazz song of note in over 60 years of music & would be remembered popularly for the Sanford /Son Theme if not for MJJ).
It seems Michael Jackson is so talented that we must find flaws in his brilliance because many can't accept that one person can be so naturally gifted . 'but but he can't strum a guitar"
Singing/Dancing/Songwriter.
Wrote & produced the last top ten original American hits for Diana Ross (Muscles)& Mick Jagger(State of Shock) & other minor hits for others .Could have gone that route if he chosen, his talent was so massive.

For the record I do not now nor have ever liked Michael Jackson, since he left the Jackson 5.
Just fyi, I know some of your brains can't rap around that concept but try to realize it is true.
Polarizing? Well they go through a lot of Ray-bans no doubt.
Historically The Who and esp Zeppelin were far more popular in the mainstream and thus I would say accepted, than Pink Floyd, that isn't a statement of who is better or who is more beloved by their fans, it's just that The Who and LZ were well known for receiving heavy radio rotation when Floyd was still largely considered counterculture rock. Money from Dark Side was one of the few radio hit's from pre Wall PF era, while The Who and LZ had already enjoyed phenomenal success.
X-gen and beyond fans probably didn't have this bias in exposure and likely don't view them as marginally differing successful rock bands. A lot of the older generation really didn't know who Pink Floyd was until MTV came along and they saw Another Brick in The Wall video and placed the group with the song that had gained airplay.
Strangely enough the phenomenal work that is Dark Side, Animals and Wish You Were Here were largely unknown to the public at large when The Wall was delivered. In the days when Quad was still being considered as a viable replacement for stereo,, (I still have my quad additions of Atom Heart Mother and Dark Side among some others) you could hear a lot of Lynrd Skynrd, Billy Joel or Rolling Stones, without a peep of Pink Floyd getting played. At that time groups like YES, Genesis and Pink Floyd slipped under a lot of radar waiting to blow up.
Possibly shocking info for some of you youngsters, I know, well learnin you your rock history is why we are here.

And yeah I don't think anyone is going to bash Pink Floyd. That might be a safe one.
Not as polarizing as either The Who or Led Zeppelin.

75% of people on this board think Led Zeppelin sucks...they wouldn't qualify in this thread
Posted on 7/13/14 at 4:57 pm to Spaulding Smails
Zeppelin definitely gets hate on here for ripping off blues artists. I get that to an extent (especially regarding a lack of mention in the writing credits) but c'mon. All music has strong influences to varying degrees.
I also say The Who > Led Zeppelin
I also say The Who > Led Zeppelin

I wasn't really showing my cards on that one. I'd just say that for being universally liked on the MB, Zep and The Who don't have a majority backing them
Posted on 7/13/14 at 5:04 pm to Spaulding Smails
Agreed.
It's hard to pinpoint the dislike for The Who. For The Doors it's people saying Morrison is a douche and for Zeppelin they claim the blues ripoff. But there remains contempt for The Who, and I never hear why exactly.
I will admit bias since they were my first concert (although I was a big fan before that) and they also were the halftime performers when the Saints won it all

I tend to think that at the point when The Who were coming up that the market was big on "Beatles vs. Stones", so The Who were the third wheel, of sorts, and just not enjoyed or valued as much as the other two. I personally like The Who, as well
ETA: the bigger complaint I get from friends and non fans is that Who songs sound very similar
