Anyone else see this play? Unbelievable. Hamilton with a poor bunt right at Pirates first baseman, hesitates when the fielder tries to tag him, fakes him out, and beats him to first.

I wish I knew what was considered a base path

eta: He was totally out of the base path. Whatever. Still a sick move

You guys don't know baseball. He should not be out. The only time running inside the line like that would be an out is if a throw to first would have hit him.

He is entitled to space on either side of where the fielder originates in the path. I can't remember the exact number, but I think it's 18 inches on either side. It looks like the right call.

Reminds me when a guy on my team in HS had a similar situation except he slid under the tag and got back up and tagged first. It was the weirdest thing. My coach about had a stroke until he realized it worked.

Any runner is out when --
(a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from his baseline to avoid being tagged unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball. A runner?s baseline is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely

Exactly. So he is clearly out because from where the tag was attempted to where he landed is more than 3 feet.

I mean, you should't say stuff like this if you are wrong.

Billy has come a long way from the first 2 months of the season. I remember opening day watching Wainright making him look like he shoulda been in A ball. It was that bad.

Now, he's legit.

Thank you. I couldn't remember if it was 3 feet total or 3 feet away from the line on each side.
