Hotels and restaurants can't find enough employees, said Marriott International CEO Arne Sorenson in a Washington Post editorial last August. "At large hotels at ski resorts such as Aspen or southwest Florida beaches with small local populations, we struggle to find sufficient numbers of people willing to take labor-intensive jobs during peak season," he wrote. "We must deal fairly with the 11 million people in this country who lack legal status. They are not leaving, and we must allow them to become taxpaying participants."

Two-third of construction companies have reported labor shortages, according to a survey by the Associated General Contractors of America, a group for builders that's also pushing for immigration reforms. The shortages are hurting the nation's housing recovery, according to a study by the National Association of Homebuilders.

quote:

Farmers can't find enough pickers for ripe crops. California farmers are willing to pay wages of $30 an hour and still can't find workers, said Tom Nassif, CEO of the Western Growers Association, a trade group of California and Arizona farmers. California's farmers have 25% fewer workers than they need to harvest produce, which means crops have been rotting in the fields, he said.

Then RAISE YOUR DAMN WAGES

Stop trying to artificially distort the labor market by flooding it with millions of new (mostly unskilled) laborers.

Follow the damn laws of supply and demand. Can't find enough people? Raise your wages. I guarantee you people will do these jobs if you pay them enough

frick these guys

More immigrants not needed. Quit paying people to sit at home who would normally be doing these jobs.

This is in and of itself a part of the market.

I have mixed feelings about immigration. On one hand, I am for freedom of migration and opportunity for all. On the other hand, due to the tax-subsidized entitlements that come along with being a resident, an influx of non-paying immigrants causes an enormous burdern on an already shaky system.

If I had my druthers, there would be no freebies, and there would be no immigration restrictions. This will not happen, unfortunately, so something has to be done. What is that? I don't really know.

I think this is extremely bogus. These companies know very well that the increase in claims on the workers comp side are absolutely not worth it.

With our current entitlement structure, I can't say I disagree. We change course on entitlement and labor intensive jobs will be filled and we can at the same time open up more paths for immigration work visa programs.. We need citizens to desire to be one but shouldn't shun those that want to be here to work without becoming one.

Or maybe as the example of the enrolling in school showed, these folks are not as the government contends as under aged minors. Just maybe, some are older and still let across the border illegally and even allowed to move about the US unattended without restriction. The new work force and voting block.

This is where I am at. I'm all for guest workers or future citizens coming and working in the USA, but it seems like a disaster in the making if they are getting State assistance for housing, food, and other types of welfare.

shite I'll go do this during my breaks from college if I get paid $30 or more per hour.

Those are good wages - but it is incredibly tough work.

Due to Alabama's immigration/identification laws, it saw a decrease in migrant population, and subsequently the labor pool for these kinds of jobs. The state tried to plug the gap with prison labor - but most of the inmates decided they'd rather stay in jail rather than pick fruit.

Republicans can do outreach to the Hispanics all they want but you will never get them until you fully embrace amnesty and the problem with that is it basically opens up the border and that is a goddamn disaster waiting to happen when we are handing out welfare and entitlements left and right. Socialism/welfare and open borders don't mix at all.

Under the only circumstances we can have an open border is if there is no welfare state and entitlements are strictly, strictly, controlled and regulated. Socialism and open borders don't mix. I've never understood how we have such a liberal immigration policy compared to the rest of the world.

Most of Europe is socialistic and they understand that they cannot have open borders as it does not mix at all with their collectivist way of life and philosophy. To attempt to do so is to destroy your country via financial ruin and shortages of all kinds.

I don't have a problem with open borders if we don't have a welfare state. I have a problem with open borders if we have a welfare state.

Business leaders are not thinking long term. This is what will happen

1) More immigrants come.
2) They fill the needed jobs
3) They vote in democrats on the local, state, and federal levels
4) With Democrats in office, businesses are always under threat

It's so short sighted. Democrats are extremely hostile to economic freedom and liberty and these immigrants are only headed in one direction politically. Have they learned nothing from democrats in States like California and New York being as anti business as they are?

Someone on this board could probably do a chart. Percentage of foreign born people in this country versus the income gap starting in the 70s.

I don't see how liberals can tell republican. Pay for welfare services plus let's add all these people. It is idealism on steroids. It is this everyone wants to be Rosa Parks or MLK thing.

+1 Even beyond raising wages, build a cabin on your property so workers can stay there instead of commuting in and out every day. Barns don't cut it for people who aren't desperate. These guys are just asking for more desperate people they can underpay and abuse.

If you raise your wages then supply will meet demand.

Seems these businesses just want cheap labor.
