These places were once fairly common, but are sadly disappearing. I have not been to Peggy's in a couple of years but they continue trudging on, doing what they do very well.

Peggy's in Philadelphia, MS

Not a bad way to spend $9.00.

We're doing it to our own damn self. People who don't see the value in that over some nonsensical gimmick national chain really are without hope. That IS what it's all about.

Great Find MD. Thank you for sharing.

I met a food cart vendor in NYC that had a basket where people made their own change. Outside of his I've never seen another business operate like that. Pretty cool..

Not really the same, but driving down Kamehameha Highway in Hawaii you'll see many fresh fruit bundles with honesty boxes at the end of people's drive ways. I use to get off the bus, walk and pick up 2-3 pineapples, then go back to the bus stop and head back into town. $5 per pineapple and it was the largest most healthy piece of fruit you'd ever see or eat.

It's really nice that some places can still do this. Gives us some faith in humanity.

Sciples Mill has an honor box also where you can pick up your stone ground cornmeal and leave the money. I have photos of it at home that I'll post later.

Indicates there were days when most folks were honest.

My first time there I was that same "where do I order, where do I pay?" guy.

I dream of seeing those big cast iron pots cooking good food.

Nice. I appreciate what the Southern Foodways Alliance is doing. That being said, I always come away with a feeling that the South is dying when I see things like this.

These house communal dining restaurants are almost gone now. Certainly places who serve this menu type are all but gone. Having the opportunity to eat one porkchop or four porkchops for the same cost is becoming more rare all the time.

I like their food but honestly avoid all you can eat places now. Very few have the quality this place has which makes me reluctant to dine with most of these buffet type restaurants.

The other negative for me is that I can eat more than I can eat. Makes for an unpleasant afternoon after dining with them at lunch.

I worked on this skill for years. I am trying to be a better person, but I must admit that sometimes...

I blame it on Turnip greens and cornbread. To be more accurate turnips, collards, mustard greens and cornbread with lots of pot liquor.

That John T Edge has his hands in a lot of stuff.

I don't know about just the South but certainly small towns and many of them are dying. That is a shame.

Thanks for sharing that, MD.

"We serve good food. We get the kinda people in here that we can trust. And if it ever gets to where we can't do that, we'll quit."

That video just makes you feel good - the simplicity, the honesty, God, I love the South.
