I don't post much on this board, but figured I would get less responses from dick heads here than the OT. Having to put my boxer down Friday. She's been in the family for 16 years. This is the first real family pet and it sucks to know that after Friday she's no longer going to be here. How is it dealing with the loss of your first family pet? Thanks fellas.

That's a really tough thing to do.

She had a wonderful, long and fruitful life and wouldn't have asked for a better family.

Crack open a cold one for her on Friday night

It sucks and is a bad thing to go through. On the bright side, think of all the good times y'all had and be thankful it isn't a family member or other loved one that is passing away.

Will be hard for sure. Just remember the good times you shared with your 4 legged friend. She will be forever in your/your family's heart. Time will heal all my brother...I promise.

It's tough for sure but bringing in a new pup will help

Sucks man. I have a boxer and love him dearly. He's almost 8. You're lucky you got more than 10 years out of him from what I've heard about the breed. My buddy is already getting feeble. Make his last days awesome, keep him close and don't be scared to cry man. Remember the good times

Had to put our greyhound to sleep two years ago . Thought I would handle it a lot better then I did . Brace yourself , it will not be a good day . Good luck ...

My boxer is 5 and he's the best. 16 years is an extremely long life for a boxer. You're a lucky dude.

That stinks. Losing a pet is awful, at least to me. Thursday night steak dinner for your friend, and lots of hugs Friday morning. Take a few pictures this week.

sorry to hear about that. Spend as much time with her over the next few days as you can and pamper her as much as possible. My rat terrier turned 17 last friday and I'm dreading the day that I know will soon come

Put my best friend, Jack, a golden retriever - yellow lab mix down 4 years ago on a Friday morning after 13 years.

The vet told me how sorry he was for me. I told him, "Don't be. We had a great 13 years together." The I told him, "I hope we get to do this again in another 14 or 15 years."

The point is, you don't "have to" put your dog down, you "get to". There are a lot worse ways to lose them.

BTW, I adopted a 15 month old female, Jackie, who looked just like him at the same age, a week later.

She's my best friend now. It hurts, but only for awhile. All you remember is the good stuff.

It blows having to put down a family member.

A new pup is in order to ease the pain.

it's gona hurt, period. and that stinks, but remember the fun times. also, remember that she ain't having fun anymore and would appreciate a proper send off and goodbye.
my story:
i was gona have to put my choc lab down a few years ago and had made myself realize that the time had come. 2 days before the scheduled vet visit i came home from work to find that he had died at my back door waiting for me after work like he always did. i never did get to say a "proper goodbye" and still feel like the rug got yanked out from under me.

Getting a new pet helps, but it is hard no matter what. Think of it as helping her, not hurting. If you are a Christian consider this, dogs might not have souls, but they are almost as important as family members in our lives. I believe our animals will be in heaven with us, because of how important they are to us. That isnt an arbitrary anecdotal argument either, i can back that up theologically.

Also being put down is better than what happened to my last animal that died. Our 8 year old cat had a heart attack. Ran around the house for about 40 seconds meowing her head off, falling over, in obvious distress and pain. I then watched her fall over dead. If you can keep your animal from an end like that, then you must.

Hug her, Make her comfortable, get some pictures, and make some final memories.
