Random thought - Shoot outs for MLS

I'm a fairly regular poster on the soccer board here, don't flame I'm all whacked out on antibiotics and nyquil (stomach bug).
Here goes.
Americans hate ties. (whatever)
If every game ended in a shootout to avoid a tie would that not give us a huge advantage when it comes to shoot outs in big stage tournaments?
They are rare to see on the premier stage due to the point system, so no teams are THAT experienced with each other for the whole production of the shoot out.
And maybe not every game.
I feel that if the MLS were to implement a system to allow more shoot outs we'd be more prepared in the various cups that the USMNT might find themselves in. I understand that penalties are practiced all the time, but the actual situation of being in a shoot out seems much different and already being there time and again would be advantageous, not to mention attract the crowd more.
I understand the entire point system might have to change a bit and could make the whole idea stupid, I'm just throwing it out there.

Shootouts should be the last resort when 2 teams tie and 1 MUST move on... It just isn't fair over the course of the season to end games in a shootout. The 1 point is fair for 2 teams tying in the regular season.

This used to be a thing in MLS, along with countdown clocks.
Soccer fans didn't like it.
Having shootouts or other attempts at "Americanizing" the rules won't win over enough fans for MLS to play with non-FIFA regulations.

i agree. i just see shoot outs as such a mental game. My suggestion was to put us in that more often for an advantage

They weren't penalty shootouts either. At first they had hockey style penalty shot shootouts. It was fun to watch, but the purists hated it.

I get that, but then the best teams could potentially give up playoff seeding for another team that is better at PKs. Shootouts are a necessary evil in tournaments bc of the tight time restrictions, but to give a team 2 more points for winning a shootout is not a true reflection if the outcome IMO.

I actually like this idea because I think a game, regardless of sport, should be decided by being played as closely to the regular rules as possible.
Make the shooter dribble at least. Even if he dribbles straight at the GK and takes the typical penalty shot.

MLS was desperate during their initial formation.
Desperation, as any barfly can tell you, does not often lead to positive results.

This the first time I realized that a good amount of people on this board have never seen a shootout like this. They were terrible in the MLS but they are much more fun to participate in than a normal shootout.

I don't have any issues with ties. But just to humor the op, maybe do shootouts and the winner gets 2 points and the loser gets 1.
I would rather keep things the way they are.

My point wasn't that I don't like ties. I'm an EPL fan and I understand that both teams deserve a point if theres no clear winner after 90 minutes.
I was just pointing out that a bunch of games in the WC have ended with a shoot out and one of the teas choking and its virtually impossible to practice that other than when your countries fate is on the line. But if that sort of mental pressure was a bit more often for the US players, maybe it would help. USA/Belgium almost came down to penalties.

Taking a PK in a shootout in front of 20,000 people does not equal taking one in front of 56,000 with millions watching around the world. Not saying it wouldn't help the physical aspect of it but it's almost impossible to mentally prepare for taking a PK at the World Cup. As we know PKs are far more of a mental game than physical.

1. playing for 1 point in the standings does not equal playing for your tournament lives or even the trophy itself and having to wait 4 more years for another shot if you lose
2. i'd hope our goalkeeper and penalty takers are long out of MLS or had never even been there
