Unfinished wood floor question

The house I'm in has carpet, but under the carpet is wood flooring, it's an old house. The wood appears to be unfinished, from what I can tell by lifting the carpet.
What are my options? Pull carpet up and leave floors like they are? Put wax on the wood? Have them finished?

Put carpet under the wood.
Seriously though have them finished.

How much am I looking at spending to get them finished? Cost per square foot

What kind of wood? plywood, tongue & grove oak, any dog/cat piss or water stains?

Not really sure. I don't think it's tongue and groove. It's a very old house and I'm thinking it's the original floors from when it was built, it's not plywood sheets. Yes I have a dog, but she's house trained and goes out during the day when I'm gone

$1 per sq ft to sand. $2 per sq ft to finish on average. So for about $3 per square foot, you could turn it around. I would do the demo and sanding myself.

Old houses often have water/pet piss stains from previous owners. Difficult if impossible to remove the stain and usually have to replace the wood.

And that's something I won't know about until I rip the carpet up

I would bet they're not unfinished. Post a pic, but yeah, if they're is good shape, refinish them. My house is only 1300 sf, and 50 years old. The entire house house has 1" red oak, beautiful. It cost me 3k to have them redone.

Go up to Home Depot or Lowe's. They will give you an estimate.

This house is close to 100 years old. The floors at one point were lived on and then for some reason they got covered with carpet.

In that case, you need to watch out for lead or asbestos.

The only insulation in this house is in the attic, and it's that pink roll out insulation stuff.

In Texas, any professional will test your floor for both. Chances are you're good, but they will test. The cheapest and easiest route will be putting carpet over the wood. Real wood is a pain in the arse to deal with, IMO.

Real wood doesn't give you the same formaldehyde rush that carpet does. And you can't grow dust mites on wood.

Wood scratches easy. You have to refinish it a lot. It's beautiful, but it's a pain in the arse. Carpet is cheap.

There's already carpet over the wood. I'want to get rid of the carpet.

Most wood floors will last for decades without refinishing as long as you don't walk on them with your golf shoes.
