I am thinking of going to Bacchanal tonight: 4 people. I've never been. Is this a good idea or is it too hot there this time of year? Any tips on where to sit, best time of the evening to go?

I've never been, but folks discouraged another poster from going there in the last week or so.

It's hot for sure, stick to whites and rosés. It probably won't be too crowded on a weeknight, but I'd go around 6 and drink for awhile before ordering to ensure you get a decent table.

FYI: Essence Fest starts rolling into town tonight-tomorrow. I'm not sure if the party rolls that direction or not.

It's not the most incredible place ever, but why would people here be actively discouraging others from going there? I don't get that.

I saw it listed this week as a recommendation for folks coming in town. Not saying someone didn't disagree, but I didn't see it.

And how does that work? Do you go in, secure a table, then go order wine from the retail store and food from a counter?

go into the retail store, order your wine, get your wine, go outside and grab a table, go order your food at the the window

OR

walk through the store, walk up the stairs, order wine and food inside.

I wish they'd open another one. Hate going out there.

I enjoy Bacchanal but you gotta make sure you get there early. I've even been on weeknights and seen every table filled by 7pm.

My only real complaint about the place is that a lot of times the music is so loud that you can barely talk to the person next you. I'm all for having a band, but I think the atmosphere at Bacchanal should be more conducive to having a conversation than yelling over a jazz trio. I'll go elsewhere if I'm more interested in the music than the conversation.

My BAD! It was Barcadia folks discouraged and Bacchanal that they suggested instead. So sorry about that. I reversed them! Please accept my most sincere apologies.

I think if you go around 6 on a weekday w/ only 4 people you'll have a good chance of your choice to sit either inside upstairs or outside in the courtyard. I have sat both places and the upstairs can be kinda lame if it's not crowded.. especially in the back room. The room inside where the bar is + the balcony overlooking the courtyard are both good spots.

I would definitely go straight for a table when you arrive and worry about what to eat + drink after you secure a spot.

The cocktails are good upstairs and the wine in the retail spot is marked up roughly double grocery store prices, but still a good deal considering the atmosphere, music, etc.

For food the bacon wrapped dates, chicken confit and burrata are all good. They also have cheeses in the fridge inside (downstairs) you can buy and they'll arrange on a board for you with accoutrements. Decent beer selection in the cooler downstairs as well.

They also have this pork shoulder that comes in a bowl packed with all sorts of good stuff. The value for the food is incredible there.

If you have more than one person, secure at able first. Then have one person go get the wine and another person go get the food. End o' story.

I love selecting 3 cheeses and a meat and having them do up an amazing cheese tray. It's very impressive.

For an entrée, their pork chop is really, really good, and a helluva deal. It's huge.
