I find that when I take a full swing I can hit irons consistently. But if I have to throttle down all hell breaks loose....left, right, topping the ball, hitting fat.

IE, suppose I hit my 7 iron 150 yards with a full swing. But then I'm 120 yards out and I can't go to a 9 iron because of a tree requiring a 7 iron trajectory.

Is there a trick to hitting an iron without a normal full swing and still maintain control? TIA.

I'd guess you are to armsy and wristy. Need to turn your body through the ball more. Easier to slow it down that way.

Just watch Andrew Loupes swing.

Complete opposite of most people I run into.

OutofTown had some solid advice.

if i were to guess i would figure that you are decelerating big time right before contact, just think nice and easy but you have to keep your pace through the ball.

Quit hitting your tee shot in compromising positions.

Just learn how to hit a punch shot with the ball in the back of your stance and your position at address is closed with weight on your left leg.

I'd say for Zach's age, that's great distance on a 7i.

Plus the fact that he has to cook the same dinner every day for his wife for 3 YEARS because she won't eat anything else.

His creativeness might be stagnated and that reflects on the course.

do you have trouble hitting a punch shot (lower trajectory, not a full swing) or simply swinging a bit slower? ... sounds like you're talking about hitting a punch shot ... if you're trying to punch it, don't shift as much weight to the right side during the backswing, make sure you're still using shoulders instead of all wrists/arms ...

For the shot you said move it back in your stance choke up and abbreviate follow through. Will help you flight the ball.

But is just practice. Just have to learn to swing the same with less juice normally. I can hit 3 clubs the same distance if needed.

Don't decelerate your swing.

I punch a hybrid...almost like a putter stroke, if I have to stay low under tree limbs. But if the terrain is bad and I need to get the ball in the air I need a soft 8 iron that won't fly over the green. When I soften up it's usually bad.

Thanks. I never choke up because I have a baseball background way before golf and always held the bat at the very end of the handle. Will try this tomorrow.

It seems like you just get you body out of whack. Like your body is going at same speed just slowing down you arms. If that makes sense. Or the other way around.

Moving the ball back in your stance will also give the ball a higher trajectory will help the distance issue as well.

I had this problem wen I first started playing. A lot of my issue was when I swung hard, I didn't give my self a chance to think. When I slowed it down, my swing got very technical and less athletic.

IMO, you may be better served at soliciting valuable swing tips with a video or gif of your swing.

For every bad golf shot there are no less than a dozen reasons or combinations of reasons for the outcome. If you are struggling hitting less than full shots, it could be because your timing is off, you are getting armsy and wristy (which was good advice), or you could be deaccelerating, etc.

I think that taking something that someone tells you without looking at it may create more problems than it helps. If you upload a video/gif, you may get better results. I'm sure there are some qualified people to tell you what you are potentially doing wrong.

If you have the ball back in your stance it could cause more spin which could "balloon" the ball. Just depends on the club head at impact
