If indeed Jesus had a liberal philosophy, how can conservatives claim to be the party of Jesus if they are against welfare for the poor and downtrodden?

On the flip side, how can Democrats claim Jesus if they support killing babies?

Liberal democrats are atheists. Jesus was not.

It's pretty simple. Jesus believed that giving should be done out of love, not compulsion. It wasn't really a gift if it was required or if you were doing it to make yourself look good for other people. The ideal Christian would spend his life volunteering and giving anonymously.

Probably, but it's a good question.

I've come to the conclusion that both parties are anti-Jesus and perhaps a bit evil.

This thread will be deleted...

But welfare is against biblical principles IMO because giving to the needy should be done voluntarily out of compassion from the heart, and not by force

Why will this thread be deleted? Whether the admins like it or not, religion plays a big role in politics.

This + I'm not against the poor ... I'm against the lazy.

I also am against slavery, so I don't like to see the Government make slaves out of people, whether they are willing or otherwise.

shite thread is shite.

I doubt anyone thinks Jesus would be a liberal democrat today.

Some think he would have been a GWB-style compassionate conservative (minus the wars, I guess?) or an old style traditional southern democrat (minus the Jim Crow).

No one with a lick of sense actually thinks Jesus would fit neatly into any political party (or western philosophical/political tradition for that matter).

This, so this really isn't even an interesting discussion. It will just be a shite tossing contest to try to show hypocracy in Christanity.

But this argument doesn't work.

Jesus summed this up.

"Give to Caesar what is Caesar's"

Form of government is inconsequential.

True Christianity is not and cannot be lived out through government edict.

It is based on an individual's actions. Not a nation-state's.

The U.S. could declare itself tomorrow to be officially anti-Christian and it still wouldn't matter.

Jesus also had a Jewish philosophy. The Christians went another way on that, so......

Jesus had plenty of opportunity to get involved in politics/issues of governance and he did not. He did not despite the fact that many people wanted him too.

He would be neither a liberal nor a conservative, a democrat nor a republican. His message isn't about earthly kingdoms. It was about how individuals relate to God and each other.

In a sense, he was radically apolitical.

Well Jesus wouldnt say, "Well screw those people in the ghetto because they refuse to help themselves."
