Should everyone have the "right" to die?

I'm kind of torn on it myself. The libertarian part of me says it should be an individual right not infringed upon the government, but I've also seen the effect suicide has on the person's family, so maybe it really isn't an individual thing because the act really harms others as well.

Thoughts?

I would hate to burn up my life savings in a coma so it may be an option that is best left open to the individual to decide.

I think Obama should be a test pilot for this program.

Against - if you want to die, don't go to the doctor. Plenty of ways to get enough drugs with which to kill yourself.

There's a wide range of variables in this debate. Is it the withdrawal of heroic measures? That's already available pretty much everywhere.

And do we want people able to have a doctor assist them when they have a terminal illness or when they have a bad day or something in between?

Not talking about people in comas/vegetables etc

I mean healthy individuals who decide they want to die because they are unhappy.

Anytime you try to justify things by how it could affect other people, then you take away individual rights. The collective mentality is why we are trending the way we are.

I don't have a problem with assisted suicide. If I am in severe pain and living on machines I would want the right to pull the plug, if I choose.

I'm ok with it as long as the individual is forced to wait one month after applying for end of life.. There would be shortened timeframe for disease where mercy is needed

Physician assisted suicide =/= the withdrawal of life sustaining interventions

No. That's why god invented guns.

However, I am in favor of a terminally ill person requesting a painless way out from a doctor.

I'm okay with physical related suicide deaths.

It should be allowed provided the patient is terminally ill and is mentally competent to make such a choice and that is affirmed by an independent physician and psychiatrist that's not connected to the situation in any way.

I'm not killing any healthy people just cause they ask me to.

That's my thoughts.

Do no harm! Comfort care, hospice care are all good. Asking the physician to hurry it up in this "assisted" way is over the top.

Ehh, either way I'm not sure I'm comfortable with doctors giving their patients lethal injections.....

It should be legal. Physicians should not be forced to provide the service however.

Check out Terry Pratchett's 2011 documentary Choosing to Die. It's a great documentary exploring the subject. Very powerful and emotional.
