Why is square dancing a part of every elementary curriculum?

I can't see any point in anyone's life where this would ever a useful talent to have.

School should be about mental development as well as physical development. Teaches rhythm, balance, coordination, etc...

Holy shite I didn't know they were still doing this. Did this when I was a kid.
FWIW it was my first real encounter with the opposite sex, so I guess it's good for something.

As a kid who loved PE and everything it stood for, square dancing was the most hated time of the year.
